Slave/master Hardrive Question.

Post by d-T-r » Fri Nov 09, 2007 3:15 pm

Basically my computer fucked up the other day and i knew it was about to happen as its pretty old. Took out the harddrive and connected it as a slave drive in my other pc. can access everything on there fine apart from my documents...

All it gives me is is access denied when i try and open it.

Is there a way of either unblocking that restriction or transfering the files in another way. someone was saying i could do it through ms-dos but i didnt really have a clue...appreciate any help/suggestions.

nice one.

it's a bit of a long way round the problem but if you by an external hard drive case (about £20-£30) and put the hard drive in that then you shouldn't have the problem... and you got yourself an external hard drive...

there's gotta be an easyer way though
will check it out and let u know cos i just put a drive from my old pc into my new box.

not sure if that will work as it uses the slave drive as a flash drive it works in the same way as a ext drive i might be wrong but mine did the same and i had this prob i just sacked it of and formated it i have a 160 ext drive with all my samples and anything important on then if the computer messes up witch thay do a bit i dont lose all my stuff i also keep it backed up on my second computer just in case 2 cant go wrong in the same day :?

It's a permissions problem. Just login using an admin account and then just change the permissions on the whole directory and give full access to everyone. You should then be able to access the files fine with your regular account.

cheers fpr the suggestions people.

i do have an external drive aswell so i was wondering if that would come in to play. and as for the permission thing, how would i do that?

The pc's just a single one, not in a network or anything so i dont even login so i would assume i was already the admin by default...only now it wont let me be the admin of the drive for some reason.
but it's weird cos it's only my documents its restricting me from. all of the programme files, plugins, dlls etc are fine. hmm

Even if you aren't physically logging in with an account, it is still logging in and using an account. Windows uses a profile system for everything in My Documents and also for all the App settings etc. The permissions are usually locked just to that user and to admins. The problem is you hooked that hard drive up to another computer that's using a different account and it appears that account does not have admin rights.

You could also just check your user accounts in the control panel and add the account your using to the admin group.
