Why are some producers so stingy with their dubs?
Yeah, it stops anthems getting rinsed out and stops all the DJ's playing the same tunes.sully_shanks wrote:if things are limited it keeps em special. it also encourages diversity, cos not everyone has the same tunes. all adds a bit of mystique n excitement to the tunes...
But I guess there's a difference between keeping your dubs tightly locked down until they're released and never releasing them.

Exactly. Thats the only problem i have with how it all currently works...its good that certain tunes dont get completely rinsed by all the dj's at the same time, and that you know your gonna hear a load of fresh stuff whenever you go out and see a big DJ. Just a shame these tunes dont end up on my itunes!Slothrop wrote:sully_shanks wrote:But I guess there's a difference between keeping your dubs tightly locked down until they're released and never releasing them.

Still if you could have life on demand, why the fuck would you want to do anything else? It'd be nice to have that before writing it off as boring, we're not all as priveliged as you Benny boyUFO over easy wrote:because if you could have everything you want, when you wanted it, life would be really boring and no one would have any incentive to do anything for themselves.

Hmm....

Well to be honest im kinda new to dubstep, so when I ask "why are some producers so stingy with their dubs" i am genuinly enquiring. I see from most of your comments how important dubplate culture is to dubstep. im not just tryin to have a winge, its just music is a lot more freely available in most other genres, but i suppose thats one of the attractive things about dubstep in some ways.
don't mean to piss anyone off with this thread, it's a naive question is all.

fair play man. the way i see it is this: its the exclusivity of passing around tunes and the dubplate culture that allows dj's to make their sets unique and have a particular "sound" or "style". i mean, if everyone was able to play Lemon, it would make Skream's sets that much less exciting to hear. that's just one example.jasonn wrote:Well to be honest im kinda new to dubstep, so when I ask "why are some producers so stingy with their dubs" i am genuinly enquiring. And like Contakt said, they're just making music. In my mind, a tune is released because its something that's good enough for someone to devote their time and money to send to the pressing plant, and thus immortalising it in history. the lost dubs, those are the treats!! that's what makes every set special. and that's what makes listening to old radio sets/mixes still exciting to listen to, a few years down the line.
