well.. it does :P to an extent

early tricky stuff - dubbed out crackly coolness. doesn't get enough credit cos the sounds so unfashionable now, but with the level of exposure this albums getting I wouldn't be massively surprised if the same was true of burial's sound in 10 years - unless he does release that 'ultra-darkside album' :D

big trip hop fan then shonky?
agree that the first album is probably better as an album, more of a cohesive whole but theres some really good tracks on the new one. not sure how untrue flows as an album as ive only heard it on vinyl, hard to see how it flows when swapping plates etc, and when the track listings all wrong

Anyone else find that Archangel (the first tune on the vinyl format) is a sad-sounding tune?

Just wondering, because it seems most people find it kind of happy. I think it's got something melancholic to it. Interesting the contrasting ways people perceive these things.

Archangel has an antagonistic feeling innit, its just not sad... its happy at the same time, weird feeling, opposing feelings so easily.

heartbreaking soul
Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:
Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

Tricky was fucking awesome though (till he quit skunk), most trip hop was just either repetetive or noodly (bit like dubstep on the former...hmmm..I spot a link)
Hmm....

I think it's good that Burial's music is open to so many different interpretations. I'm not sure why I think that's a good thing, I just do
my 2 cents

although there are some stunning 'stand out' tracks on Untrue, Burial is a better album. it gels more conherently.

more importantly, the first album had a real mysteriousness about it; it was really sadly nostalgic but you couldn't put your finger on why.

Untrue however, wears its heart on its sleeve; it drives home the THIS IS A SAD SONG aspect, and I think it loses an emotional dimension that made the first so intriging.
i sort of agree with you on this. the first one was way more ambiguous (much more of a "dub" album in that the vocals floated in and out of the mix with less frequency). the latest one is more obvious in its intentions. i don't think it's a weakness or any fault though, it's just different and anybody who was taken by surprise by burial's latest detour wasn't paying attention. tracks like "unite" and his "wayfaring stranger" remix played with vocals in a more obvious way than the first record.

really i see the latest album as more sunny, and frankly more pop-friendly. like some form of mutated r&b from an alien planet; recognizable as pop r&b but strangely twisted. good stuff. i'm glad he went in this direction. for the next album i'm hoping he'll tone it back down and do another moody album like the first. with tracks like "versus" i see a bright (er, dark) future for burial.

this might be a weird observation (and maybe i'm crazy or just a total fanboy) but has anybody else noticed the similarities between burial and the early 90's shoegaze rock band and cult favorite "my bloody valentine?"

both artists are extremely reclusive. both are known above all else for the quality and texture of their music (ie. lo-fi equipment and production, bittersweet washes of noise and static, melancholic atmosphere, androgynous vocals buried in the mix, lyrics largely indecipherable). both have release two albums to date, both regarded as undisputed genre classics.

After listening to it - I cant help but feel that many of the tracks are just dying for a full vocal -

Can you imagine how good a proper soul/R&B vocalist would sound - it would be THE SOUND OF FUTURE R&B for 2010+

Next album needs 2 or 3 full vocal tracks with a female vocalist (still deciding who) 1 track with and a male reggae artist (i.e. Horace Andy style)
also a good hip hop track (Dabrye style)

Imagine Tricky over Burial!?

Untrue (IMHO) isnt quite the new 'Blue Lines' but I think he could make it , just needs more vocals for the lyrics/story to complete the package.

Does anyone have a link to the Kode 9 mix that is just the mix (and not the rest of MAH show)?

probably gonna come off a right dick here but nevermind...

no offence mate but im not sure you really get what burials about (i know its not my place to tell you how to listen to music but seriously...)
hip hop vocals over burial clearly arent going to happen, theyre about as far as you can get from the burial sound as you could imagine. the whole point of the cut up vocals for me (dont know the original motivations) is that they give a glimpse of the emotion and meaning that burials trying to evoke. give a track a full on vocal and part of the genius of burial is destroyed. someone mentioned this earlier on but the beauty of burial is that you have to fill in the blanks

and you'll find that mix in the mixes section somewhere

I've seen comparisons made in a few places, yeah. Works for me, and I love them both.

I know you mean well mate, but your ideas for his next album sound like the tracklisting might end up something like this....

1. Burial ft. Beenie Man - Gal dem Ramshank
2. Burial ft. Snoop - Buttpluggz n da Hood
3. Burial ft. Mary J Blige - Ooh Boy (Hot Stuff)
4. Burial ft. Boyz II Men - Ooh Girl (I Luv U)
5. Burial ft. Timbaland, Nicole Scherzinger, Justin Timberlake & Duncan Bannatyne - Got Dem Benjamins

etc, etc. You get my point.

Hm, few tracks from Untrue sometimes reminds me a LITTLE bit (of course not in a bad sense!!!!) one polish producer  His name is Noon, and here you have sample form his STUDIO GAMES vinyl EP released in 2003  http://www.wrzuta.pl/audio/iZsJ19evFK/basic_destruction

What do you think about it :?:

Just listened to the album as a whole for the first time, and...well, hats off.

Lets be honest words fall a little short with stuff like this, and anything I can say has probably already been said.

I think it might top the self-titled album for me, but that might just be because I only just finished listening to it/still am...

Either way, he is a don. :Q:
