That "warped film/tape" sound
Hi 'Yall...
Just wondering if anyone has any digital tips on that "warped tape" sound (other than sampling old film reels). Kinda like those freaky 70's educational science films w/ cheesy warped synth sounds: Boards of Canada, Black Moth Super Rainbow etc... Has anyone had any luck with any certain plugins or a mix of different plugins? Or just any cool tips for that matter.....thanks in advance if anyone has the time.....I'm using protools...
Cheers

Not sure about digital solutions, but I think Interruptor has a tape simulator.

...and I am correct.
You could always invest in a cheap 4 or 8 track tape deck and deliberately use shite tapes... I got a Fostex 8 track not long ago on the cheap because the rewind didn't work. So I've hardly used it because it's a pain but early indications are that it definitely adds a touch of sweetness to pretty much anything but subs. I definitely had boards of canada in mind when I got it, and have been pretty impressed. And that's with good, fairly unused tapes. Need to get that rewind motor fixed...
To be honest you could get away with just recording a stereo submix of everything but the kicks and sub to any old tape deck lying around and then playing it back into Pro Tools. Plenty of options if you go the hardware route.

I find that you can get a decent enough "aged" sound with a bit of lfo control on the oscillator (quite little amount, and probably unsynced) to get that weird wavery sound, and a bit of distortion (obviously tape compression/distortion can work well! although maybe some mild feedback too).
Applying a filter and fiddling with the resonance settings can also yield interesting results on top of the previous suggestions.
