I have installed it on MANY computers
and if it rejects the authorization you can call the 1800 number and tell the good people in India (where Microsoft has outsourced it's customer service) that...
"the computer had a virus and you had to reinstall the O.S."
or...
"I bought a new motherboard and had to reinstall the O.S."
etc...etc...

I'd not really thought about it before, but I suppose if all the oldskool heroes in Detroit and Chicago had been able to download cracked versions of the latest top of the line kit, they'd probably never have bothered to see if they could get any good noises out of that cheapo little Roland analogue bassline synth with the silver box...
For me, the sad thing about cracking is that so many worthy developers making really good and innovative software that
doesn't cost a bomb get bypassed as lots of people just make a beeline for knocked off copies of the most famous and expensive stuff.

I agree completely but I think it's as much software's fault as it is the crackers. You can get, say, Fruity or Renoise and Albino and one of the D16 808/909 emulators for buttons these days, legitimately, and assuming you already own a computer and some talent, you can make and sell a full tune for next to nothing.
There's no invention anymore, in the sense of getting good/weird sounds out of shit sources. The IDM crew kind of gets it, but they forgot to make decent tunes with it. Circuit bending has been done. I make the exception with Burial and Sound Forge, but I still don't buy it.
