Ouch, bloody good article, but that is pretty damning. While there is definitely that element emerging in dubstep, the backlash against it (or more like originators just doing what they do and originating in the face of it) is producing some amazing music.

Hyperdub's releases this year have been pretty much faultless, the bigger, more experimental people have been coming on pretty strong this year, (milanese, boxcutter, burial, the bug and all associated monikers), not to mention yourself and dusk.

Then there are the forum people, like Dysfunktion, both Forensicses, Two Oh One, Metalbox, Misk etc churning out some seriously original and soulful music.

So while i agree that the move to the mainstream needs to be watched carefully, this year has also been one for serious orginality and freshness, and hopefully that will be something that will continue and expand next year.

martin, as you know i also rate ghetto in a big way, and totally agree with you that he's not really making traditional grime beats. his beats are more on the 4/4 hip hop things, but his delivery is always on hyped up grime vibes which really set him apart from nearly everyone this year. controlled fury in the delivery, just like rakim had back in the day. spitfire lyrics. it'll be interesting to see if he continues to bridge the gap between hip hop and grime next year. i would've put "top three selected" way up there on the list.

I agree with a lot of what's said there, top class writing as ever.

One quibble - One Blood rather than anything else off Underwater Dancehall? The vocal cut's probably the only tune on there I don't like! Tasty beat, but the vocal's like having a stoned student (albeit a stoned student with an unusually good voice) tell you at length about this like, totally deep idea he just had, maaan, like if we're all made of the same atoms aren't we all just, like, really, one consciousness.
