Vista and audio production, and DUAL vs Quad

Post by flippo » Thu Dec 06, 2007 2:52 am

ok I'm sure I already know the answer to this, but just thought I'd make sure.

Anyone running vista?

how is it in general copared to XP

and more importantly, how has it affected your production antics? IS all your software working? what about your hardware (presonus firebox anyone?)

I am looking to start building a new beast. Given that Vista will suport 4 gig and XP only 3, I thought I might check and see if the bugs and support is really that bad.

the other thing I'm interested in, is Quad vs Dual core. I know programs don't suport it, but a) they will eventually, and b) I've also been told (by trustworth IT geek) that it will still work out how to utilise all the cores and audio apps will love it., even if they arent specificaly designed for quad core. Whos running a Q6600, and are your audio apps taking advantage of all 4 cores? I will be re-wireing apps, most of the time.

Much much appreciated for the replies in advance :).

Ok... I'm probably not the best to answer as im not up to date with the latest geekery.. but i've had some experience with some of this shit..

Firstly Vista is so god damn fucking buggy... Just bugs out with so many random tasks, although i've ran fruity and a few VST's and it seems to work as per normal... Though i just bought a new PC and installed XP service pack two and there is nothing making me want to go to vista at all cept it looks nice and shiny and black which is cool...

Not sure about quad core... but with my core duo i can run like 10 instances of massive and absynth and tons of efx with no real chug at all.. I dont feel restricted by it..

And lastly i'm wary now of computer help from computer geeks, cuz they deff know there shit when it comes to PC's, but often no idea about the audio aspect of the whole thing..

Hope any of that helps ya a bit... Summary: I hate vista and dual core does me fine.

Did they ever 'fix' the Vista drivers thing?

Last I heard, a load of hardware manufacturers, notably M-Audio, had refused to write Vista drivers because they didn't want to sign up for whatever Microsoft was pushing, mostly DRM related.

What happened?

It's definitely not better than XP for audio (or anything else...) at the minute, not least because of the CPU and memory overheads. M-Audio and E-MU have started releasing drivers which seem OK so far tho.

As always it's worth going through and shutting down all the services and flashy effects crap you don't need, makes a big difference. http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

yeah. thing that complicates it is, not really a question of Vista with 3 gig verses XP with 3 gig for me, because the reason I would put vista in would be to load up more RAM. hrmmm.

IMO its not about wether Vista compares to XP, but more is your hardware supported by Vista :?: :!:

They are releasing vista drivers now, although i wouldn't mind if they went back and fixed their XP ones first, my midi keyboard just doesn't get recognised and my soundcard is buggy as hell.
