he hardly looked like he'd worked up a sweat, did he? hatton was huffing and puffing from the 4th onwards.

he wasn't letting hatton land a fucking thing either.

when was the last time you saw a boxer get punched and fall into the ringpost? that was a clean left hook by PBF.

Final scorecards:
judge: Paul Smith 88-82
judge: Dave Moretti 89-81
judge: Burt Clements 89-81

The most points a fighter can have going into the 10th round is 90. The least amount of points (based on a 10 pt scoring system) -- 81. Mayweather won the fight -- the scorecards tell the story. Hatton got his ass kicked.

What's next for each fighter?

Mayweather -- unfortunately, it's Cotto....but the better fight would be Antonio Margarito or Paul Williams but neither of them are a "name fighter". Deep down, Cotto wants no parts of PBF, but if Cotto wants that beatdown -- PBF will gladly accept the challenge and the $10 million payday that comes with it.

Now -- if Mosley had beaten Cotto, then you're talking a huge money fight in May or June of 2008. There's no one at super welterweight (154lbs) for Floyd -- he's not gonna fight Cory Spinks. He's not gonna put on 13 pounds to take on one of the "big three" at middleweight (160 lbs): Kelly Pavlik. Winky Wright. Jermain Taylor. I don't think Floyd has the frame to put on 13 pounds or the power to deal with heavy hitters like Pavlik or Taylor. He also lacks the physical size (height) to deal with Wright, who's a natural middleweight.

Realistically -- if i'm Mayweather...i have one option: See if there's a rematch between Mosley and Cotto. For those that saw the fight, it was close. It wasn't the destruction that Floyd administered against Hatton. Winner of the fight gets Mayweather.

Or -- maybe Mayweather retires. He's got 8 figures in the checking account and a few business ventures that continue to support his lavish lifestyle. He's probably made 20 million dollars this year for his two fights (oscar DeLa Hoya and Hatton).

Hatton - A whole lot of Man City games and time to heal his wounds. He's not getting in the ring with Mayweather again and he's not gonna get another payday like this. Retirement? A couple of tune up fights then a match against Margarito or Williams? Cotto? Who knows.....

that ref in the first half of the fight was deplorable!

every 5 seconds stopping the hitman doing his job.

it has to be said tho, mayweather was class.... pure class.
very clever defencively, tying hatton up with his forearms.

mayweather seemed much bigger than hatton too.
deffo a weight too far for the hitman.

GUTTED BADLY!!

USA USA USA :o

LAS VEGAS – Floyd Mayweather Jr. had the short end of the crowd, but the better end of the fight Saturday and dominated Ricky Hatton in their heavily hyped bout for the WBC welterweight title, stopping him at 1:35 of the 10th round.

from espn.com : "The victory was a culmination of a huge year for Mayweather. He earned more than $20 million to go with the nearly $30 million he earned May 5 when he outpointed Oscar De La Hoya in the richest fight in boxing history"

The ref you're referring to is Joe Cortez. In many boxing circles -- he's considered to be the best in the sport. He has a reputation for not allowing fighters to hold and/or "fight their way out of it". I don't like a lot of holding...i want clean punching. I'm not surprised he received this assignment.

There are plenty of good refs:
Earl Morton

Raul Caiz Sr.

Raul Caiz Jr.

Jay Nady. He usually does heavyweight fights because he's 6'5".

Arthur Mercante Jr. His father, Arthur Mercante Sr. is regarded as the best referee in the history of the sport. Art Sr. was the ref in Ali - Frazier I.

My favorite -- Steve Smoger. He let's fighters fight.....he was the ref in Toney - Jirov and Ward - Burton. (By the way, Ward/Burton was on ESPN classic last night @ 10pm est.)

Defense is a staple of the Mayweather family....from is father Floyd Sr and his two uncles Roger, Floyd Jr's trainer and Jeff. Mayweather uses a defensive tactic called the 'shoulder roll' -- the right hand is held higher than normal, the left hand is low around the body and the lead shoulder (usually the left shoulder) is raised high on the cheek in order to defend head shots. The right hand is used to defend against any punch from the left (left hooks, left jab...etc). When PBF is on the ropes, he's very difficult to hit cleanly even when he's squared against the ropes because he pins his arms to his body and rhythmically slips and blocks opponents' punches. This stance also allows PBF to counterpunch easily because his hands are in position to throw.

It's an old school technique -- james toney (before he put on a lot of weight) used this style.

Hatton had to move up in weight for this fight -- from junior welterweight (140) to welterweight (147). Sure -- it's 7 pounds, but Hatton has never fought at this weight before. Mayweather -- he's been @ 147 before. it's a "natural" weight for him. Now -- if Mayweather were to move to middleweight (160), he'd have the same issues with Pavlik, Wright and Taylor that Hatton had with Mayweather. It's pure physical size and a good big man will always beat a good smaller man.

(now, many of you should be thrashing that last statement by saying, "Joe, didnt Roy Jones beat John Ruiz? Jones moved from light heavyweight [175] to heavyweight [199 and up]. Ruiz is a natural heavyweight...what gives? Here's where i'm right -- John Ruiz isnt a "good big man"...he was slow and stationery. Now if it was Lennox Lewis v Roy Jones -- that's where the theory is most applicable.)

GUTTED BADLY!!

British fans are the best -- in all sports. I wish American fans would sing more often -- could you imagine 70000 people singing at American Football games on sunday afternoon?

Wow......

funny you should say that, because he was completely ineffectual for a lot of the fight. he was standing there slapping them on the back in what appeared to be a halfarsed attempt to get them to break while letting the holding go on for ages.

i'm not suggesting hatton was robbed, he was outfought through and through. but the referee was shithouse.

The problem with boxing nowadays is that there is no undisputed champion... each random boxing group has their own champ... we need a unified champ, or there no NO champ. Period

inevitable.
waiting to see it now.

dont bash cortez, he is a solid ref.

i am not gonna get into why boxing is not popular nowadays.
because it is huge in many other countries.

most americans cannot appreciate a well fought technical fight.
they need action all the time...so they watch mixed martial arts or some kind of tough man fighting which is horrible in my opinion.

A rematch would be pointless, Mayweather was far too good for him and Hatton looked one dimensional and ineffecive, he only caught Mayweather once, and that was in the first round.

Mayweather was great in defence, and was always first to the punch and more accurate. After watching the De La Hoya fight didn't realise that he had the punching power to drop Hatton.

Hatton had the heart and commitment, but at the end of the day Mayweather was a class above.
