in all seriousness what's been working great for me has been to lay down some drums, get 'em really grooving, and systematically strip away everything that isn't totally necessary for the groove. that's the 'step' for me.

the 'dub' part-- well that's just jah samples and wobble, right?

in case anyone thinks i'm an utterly grumpy c*nt, I'm gonna zip & upload a few lil clips for your perusal. I rarely get round to finishing tunes but I can at least show you lot a few loops - I'm all about interesting riddims.

another way to keep the rythm interesting is quantizing to different sampled grooves as a track develops or even on different channels, though that can get a bit too messy. not really as hands on creative as playing the drums in live but it can give a bit of flying lotus esque wonk.

shifty shakers,hihats, and maybe subtle delays this and that, maybe a bit of reverb on that too. A bit of meow for texture, send to a group, and then re-meow, before adding some more meow.

It seemed that people used to want things that sounded different. People were excited to hear how Dubstep could sound when different producers tackled it, but now people just want to hear something louder and ruder than what came before it. Shame really. I don't know if the more open minded people have moved on, or if the influx of new heads who expect wobble + lollop is throwing things off the balance it once had.

I know a load of producers that I respect on this board are feeling the same way. And it's shitty to see them so disheartened with the whole thing as they've got so much to give the scene.

I find myself going back towards dnb for pretty much that reason, before I've even finished a dubstep tune. I liked it when dubstep was experimental and weird and not just loud sub wobbles. Like when even just this year you'd hear a Kode9 Japanese-influenced track mixed into Cluekid's Celtic one mixed into some batfuck insane Boxcutter edits and it sounded right. Now it's just kick-wobble-snare-wobble-wobble-wobble-oh-that's-enough-wobble-lets-have-some-reece-no-wait-wobble-wobble-snare-repeat.

One bad thing about a genre breaking through, now all the not-so-creative types are jumping on, which they always do, with any genre, it just seemed to happen faster with dubstep.

excuse my complete ignorance but is the kick on beat 1 and 2 or 1 and 2 on a 16th grid

just trying different things
