Drum n Bass history lesson.
The Amen break is a staple of D n B, but it's a lot deeper than a classic sample!cracktactics wrote:do those people who used to/still produce dnb use pre-made breaks or do you make your own??!
Drum n Bass is similar to Dubstep in many ways, they are related. 'Tempo' & 'Groove' are both important factors, over time they have changed in DnB as the music's progressed. It's useful to research where a style originates from, what it's 'ancestors' are. Back when it was called 'Jungle' you'd find a lot of producers were old B-Boys and Hip Hop heads. Two examples are Krust & Sappo. Sappo's early productions were all done on the Akai S950 but 'played in' (Ding Dong Bass for example) Krust / Full Cycle crew tend to sample from live recorded drums cut up. So like Dubstep there are many ways to 'approach it'. However (sharp intake of breath)... Like all music it's about 'the vibe'. No one can teach you, because it has to do with social / economic / cultural factors. The sort you will only 'learn' from the school of hard knocks. Old copies of "Atmosphere" (if you can find them?) maybe on their website?, I don't know, used to feature some very informative producer interviews as have "Knowledge" magazine.

in my head, dubstep is about less and less and less. getting the soul of a tune with the barest of elements.
d&b isn't necesarrily the opposite-- though it def. can be-- but there's MORE in d&b. more layers, more modulating sounds. it's all about the layers of percussion, a nice bassline that sonically changes, and whatever the fuck else you want to put in there.
i know i've seen some vids of commix and noisia working as well-- youtube!

I don't know about that. I find that DJ Krust - Warhead is one of the greatest dnb tunes out there, but it's as simple as it get. Same drum sample throughout, not much layering, one fucking evil bassline.TeReKeTe wrote:in my head, dubstep is about less and less and less. getting the soul of a tune with the barest of elements.

i use to make a bit of dnb before dubstep and that's sort of same thing i did. get a phat DOA pack wiv loads of amens and what not and slice them/chop them up then just add more n more on top. the hardest part for me was getting good 'roffels' or whatever there called to give it some beef.

he was in reason standalone and has loads of dr rex players up
basically, he modifies/re-arranges classic loops (amen, apache etc), layers them up and then adds a sparse simple break of his own on top
every d'n'b producer i know uses the old breaks - either as an accompaniment under their own drums, or as the focus, supplemented with their own stuff

There's fuckloads of layering going on man. Its simplicity is a facade.nekkroteukh wrote:I don't know about that. Same goes for Shy FX's 'Bambataa'
sometimes keeping it simple with very strong elements can work exceptionally well.

Life is like a box of chocolates.
