New to this genre

Post by zen militia » Mon Dec 17, 2007 5:18 am

Hey dubstepforum...

About 3 years ago I was in San Francisco djing (I'm a dnb guy), and after one of my shows we decided to go to this massive club. Some chick we were with knew the owner and could get us in comp so we decided to go. When I got there, the main room was Hip hop i think, and breakbeats upstairs (Aquasky was there). I chilled up there for a while, as I'm not super into hip hop, then later went downstairs. This is when I first learned what Dubstep was!! The main room had some dj playing really interesting sounding music, slow, but people were still dancing and had many of the same stylistic influences that I like about drum and bass.

But the type of DNB I like to make is very organic, melodic, and sometimes "trancy" in nature as well. Are there any cats making that style of dubstep? Like melodic, distorted rolling basslines with organic musical elements, and a touch of trance? That is of course what my dubstep style stuff sounds like, as its what I feel the most in DNB as well... Just looking to see if there are any other like-minded producers in this genre?

Thanks for your help - and slide by my myspace page to check out audio for Z-Audio #2 (The Pull of Guilt) and some unsigned stuff too. :)

Peace!

Zen

Reso is pretty "trancey", not too organic though.

Trancey and organic are kinda like opposites, although I can se were your coming from.

Anti-war dub by Digital Mystikz?

Any of mala's stuff could probably fit that description.

Youngsta's sets can be pretty trancey at points too.

hmmm I guess so... I guess what i mean is elements of melody arranged with some organic instruments and some electronically created parts too... I'm not expressing it very well :P

You need to be getting into Mala and Kode9 it seems!

put Digitial Mystikz (malas group) and Kode9 into the search on BAREFILES.COM (your friend getting into the sound)

Martyn is the closest I can think of to your description.
Check out Headhunter, Peverlist, 2562, Pinch, TRG and Whistla as well. All top quality producers bringing in the next evolution of the sound, in my opinion

Can you name a spread of DnB tunes you're into? I'm curious to know what you mean by your description (describing music is a bastard!).

Sorry, haha... I just re-read my last post and its kinda misleading. I like the DUBSTEP sound, but like many other genres (dnb included), about 99% of it is no good (not for me).

I produce DNB as "ben sage" and make a lot of vocal dnb and musical type stuff. As for stuff I like to listen to, I like the new calyx/teebee album for its dramatic orchestral content as well as dirty synth basslines. John B's older stuff was good (up all night etc), and my partner for DNB stuff is Subsonik, who is a "trance n' bass" master (god I hate that term!!!).

This is a pretty good list in this thread anyway, I'll be checkin out these artists for sure.

Thanks again!

i think reso is sort of similar to some of your dnb stuff. good place to start looking at least.

intex system(aka asc) and Vaccine have more of the deeper organicish sound you might dig. not trancy really but deep and organic.

i can give you recomends for more dnb influenced harder edged stuff to if you want. some heavier beats and grimy basses but not sure thats exactly what your after.
