basically yes, but keep your eye on temperatures after the switch. quiet fans usually move less air thus providing less cooling. as long as everything stays under 60°C on load you should be okdubsteppa wrote:im gonna replace some of the fans but is that just a case of opening up my pc and seeing how big the old one are an then order quiet new ones the are the same size
also check recommended fans on http://www.silentpcreview.com/ before buying. some of the "quiet" fans may not be as quiet as they claim.

I saw the best way last night, keep it in a cupboard away from the studio!

problem with building a quiet PC is that just one noisy component can ruin a lot of hard work.
I have a ZAlman HD160 case which is now acceptably quiet after many hardware changes. The worst cuplrit for noise was always the power supply - i have tested many psu's which claim to be quiet but just arent. Antec, Tagan, Coolermaster etc etc... read the claims with a pinch of salt. The only PSU i eventually found which was truly silent was the Antec Phantom 500W.
Cooler-wise i had to get an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro and set the motherboard bios to run it at 50% speed before it was virtually inaudible.
But, hard disks are noisy. The Seagate barracuda 7200.10 is ok, but its much louder than anything else in the case. Even the two geforce 7900GTX gfx cards are quieter thanks to the big chunky slo-spining fans. Im still on the hunt for a cheap, quiet hard disk but SSD drives are still much too expensive.
sometimes the simplest ideas, such as putting the PC in a cupboard and buying extension cables for your keybaord/mouse/midi keyboard, are the chepaest and best.

Find a gamer. Us nerds want our computers to run silent, and games will put a lot of hurt onto a computer. Yeah, that's all I can think of.

Have you tried suspending the drive with elastic bands?Batfink wrote:But, hard disks are noisy. The Seagate barracuda 7200.10 is ok, but its much louder than anything else in the case. it works amazingly well and doesn't cost much.
just don't use rubber bands like in the picture because they tend to break
the stuff used in underwear works perfectly.
...any noise they make is drowned out by the idiots who constantly feel the need to spout off about how 'great' they are.Auan wrote:What makes Macs less noisy?
macs arent quieter. G4's make a racket, all the G5's i've used are pretty noisy in use (some annoyingly so) and the Mac Pro's are little better. A carefully constructed PC will always be quieter.
