Vinyl vs Digital Round 1

Post by auralassassin » Fri Apr 28, 2006 12:28 pm

I know, there are a lot of purists out there, but after some extensive use with Ableton 5, I can truly say that I can do anything with it that I could do on Vinyl, times 1000.

Not that it's very important for most Genre Purists, because they play records that all sound the same, but for those who cross genre's like NY cab drivers honk horns--Ableton is the best solution for remixing on the fly... UNLIMITED by anything but your imagination and your HD/Ram/Processor capabilities.

You can seemlessly loop, warp, phrase, beatmatch, and REMIX on the fly... in the DJ booth. You can produce that new hit RIGHT IN FRONT of the crowd, and then you can remix it 10 times over, by simple addition and subtraction of VSTi, effects, loops, or entire songs...

My question to you isn't whether or not you would or wouldn't use it... my question to you, is would you dance to a set done with Ableton, a CDJ, a Midi controller and Serato?

My next question to you, would be to ask:

Why does it matter, as long as the end product is good?

and my final question, is why are you looking at the DJ booth... shouldn't you be dancing?

I love it when people use laptops properly. I saw Bong Ra last week using a laptop and controller, and he was massive!!

The problem i feel is thats its easier to dance when your mixing on vinyl, but hard to dance and use a mouse. And a DJ who just stands there is kinda boring, it can make or break a DJ set.

in all fairness, you haven't heard me on Ableton yet

I get what you're sayin though. But assume for a moment that you couldn't see the DJ or what they were doing... and you heard the set of a lifetime, then come to find out it was a guy on a laptop. Would that change your mind about the set, or would it change your mind about Ableton? :o

A lot of nights I've gone to and seen DJ's spinning other peoples tracks, I've just felt like I could have plugged those quarters into a Jukebox and heard the same thing. Then again, there are some times when I've had DJ's absolutely blow me away with vinyl/CD's... but they could have mixed the same set with Ableton. I think a lot of people tend to have trouble getting passed the means, so that they can enjoy the end product. I know that I was very resistant when CDJ's came into existance.

I should also note that I still buy more vinyl than I do MP3's. I collect vinyl other than that which I would ever consider playing out, as well. I'm talking purely from a production/live standpoint.

I've also heard some pretty badass people with a CDJ and the looping/sampling that can be done with them. And of course, like I said, there's the DJ who plays vinyl only who occassionally blows me away as well. I dunno, I was just wondering if I were to show up at a gig with my Live PA setup, if I would get people standing around with arms-folded... or if people would be open to the music?

If music is shit, then it's shit--I don't expect people to forgive a shit set... but should what I'm playing matter as much as HOW WELL I'm playing?

There's no magic mixing button on your computer that makes sets come out of your ass--and if there was, I wouldn't use them anyway :P

Bong Ra is a pimp. Anyone who saw me at Dubwar knows I'm all over the room. And they also know that Moldy's enthusiasm added MUCH fuel to the fire he was burning during his set. I can totally see what you're saying. But you can step back from the laptop for a while as well... once a track is on, it's on--just like a DJ set. Personally, I'm against the DJ sitting back and congratulating themselves for matching a beat, when anyone that can count to 32 can mix anything. It's all about timing and reading a crowd... and I don't think that holding wax in your hand is what gives you that timing or ability to read--that takes experience

Personally, I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference, from an audio only point of view. If it sounds good, then I'll dance to it/rock out/rave etc.

Personally, I couldn't care less how people have made the sounds they do, unless they totally rip somebody elses work and claim it to be their own. If people do it in Live, Reason, Cubase, then fair play to them. They'd have had to put just as much practise and thought into it as someone would on decks.

TBH, Live means you can do a whole lot more than you would normally on a set of decks. The beat repeat plugin is super fantastic numero uno!

i use Final Scratch and vinyl. i gave up on vinyl a while back, but I got fed up with FS giving my problems so i started buying dubstep vinyl lately and i like it better, i feel like i'm back to my roots. as for straight mixing i like vinyl better

i've never done any live shit with Ableton (or anything at all with ableton, for that matter) and i've never heard anyone use it live so i don't really have an opinion on it yet. i might pick it up eventually just to see what the hype is all about.

while we're in the process of waiting for something from me, there was a set posted here recently by Lady by the name of Shiva, from Indiana/Philly...

Ableton action. Make no mistake, she puts most men to shame on the wheels of steel, as well--with very aggressive, very funky, very well mixed hard hard hard techno.

This, however, is a mix of grime, electro, dubstep, techno, breaks, all in Ableton... she goes from one into the next and back again. No way in hell would this work as easily on decks:

highly recommended.

what are you talking about? It's not an argument, and it hasn't turned into one... and it's not going to turn into one. I'm simply polling people to see if it really matters how they get their music fed to them, or if all that matter is the quality of the music.

I know for a fact that quality isn't based on the method of creation. People have made great tracks with Fruityloops and a shit computer--it doesn't take anything specific but an imagination and time to kill.
