Key dubstep releases?

Post by nicemarmot » Thu Nov 10, 2005 1:44 pm

OK, so I only really got into this sound after hearing Skream's phenomenal mix on Blackdown and Youngsta's Dubstep Allstars, and have spent most of my wages since on tracking down releases.

So far I've got:

Big Apple 3 - 7
DMZ 2 - 5
Hyperdub - all except 1
(can't find those pesky first releases!)
Skream - Angry/Traitor
Skream - Request Line
Skream - Southside Dubs (woo!)
Grime 1 & 2 on rephlex
Dubstep Allstars 1 & 2
Tempa Allstars 2
Techtonic 1 & 2
Scuba - Sleepa/Timba

What's missing? What are the stone cold classics of the sound that I need?

Cheers folks!

Some of the recent classics (last 2 years or so) that are worth tracking down:

Sholay - High Plains Drifter- Tempa
Highland Spring - Benny Ill vs Hatcha - Tempa
Pump up the Jam - Plasticman - Soulja
Saddam / Zombie - SLT - Soulja
Candy Floss - S&D - Hot Flush
Knowledge - Toasty - Hot Flush
Pop Pop - Vex'd - Subtext
Lion - Vex'd - Subtext
Twisup - Loefah - DMZ

Plents more I haven't included, I'm sure others will fill in the gaps. Some of them will be harder than others though - good luck

Nice one.
Pop Pop - Vex'd - Subtext
Lion - Vex'd - Subtext
Twisup - Loefah - DMZ
Forgot Vex'd - got the 2CD on Planet Mu that covers them.
Still hunting for Twisup - got the mp3 from Bleep but need the vinyl.

Figured Tempa and Soulja would be in there, just need to find them now...

That SLT Mob vs Search & Destroy 12" on Soulja grabbed me by the balls when I first heard it.. Dub Weapon and Zombie especially.

Would you really call this a classic Dubstep release Martin? Huge of fan of Zed Bias and in particular the Phuturistix stuff on Hospital though I am, I thought their LP was a bit of a let down.

Yeh, couple of good tunes (e.g. Bad Mood), but nothing much to get excited about.

That's it mate, I was excited for literally months about the LP, seeing as I'm really into Zed Bias, and can't get enough of Hospital's garage-tempo output. When I finally heard it, I only liked a couple of the tunes, and almost all of it was ruined by poor vocals IMO.

hmmm. i know the whole jazz-y angle is dangerous, it's usually a sign that a producer wants to forget the dancefloor energy that they made their name from and attempt to cultivate a more 'serious artist' audience. and jazz-y is a mistake because how can you be jazzier than jazz itself?

these general issues aside though, i thought the Phuturistix LP was really broad in its scope, coherant as a whole and ahead of its time. i think 'thelonius punk' is one of zed's best beats ever.

but yeah, if someone wants to say it's not all that, i wont argue (like i might do with the first Horsepower LP).

Yeah, I've seen that and it's a good resource, but I was wondering what people consider to be the essential dubstep releases.

Mind you, you might consider them all to be essential!

Cheers for all the contributions, busy weekend ahead checking these out.
