Shepard is not ripping off other artist works and hope that people won't notice. That would be very silly especially at his level. He use parts of images and to transcribe is own message. In this way it is not a plagotirism. Would you be one of those people who don't consider already made art an art.

It becomes so easy to criticize artists when they become famous, especially when you don't know they background and/or forget where they come from. Shepard said 10 years ago that is goal was to be every where is the world and HAVE $$$. Every corner you go in New york city you will find a Obey stickers/stencil/poster. You can find an obey sticker in pretty much all the major city in North America and the world. What are got to say about it.

"ransacking leftist imagery is hardly something fairey has ever had a monopoly on to be honest" -> damn right.
since warhol leftist imagery & subversion has always been another way to do marketing. capitalism is a hungry black whole.

he's shit

it's pretty simple. you make a sticker and place it all over town to make people think "hey, what the hell is this dumb sticker and what product is it trying to sell me" but it led to no product so it's now supposed to make you realize that you're so conditioned to advertising that you just had to figure out what that sticker meant cuz it coulda been this cool thing that you're missing out on.

fast forward a few years and well...it leads to a product. a bunch of them actually. made in china

i've always been more of a fan of his old partner Dave Kinsey. Now he is a badman

why is andy warhol off the hook because it's not political?

^ those are both warhol pieces. the mobilgas one is in a museum. they're also both registered trademark's of corporations. andy simply painted over them and called it art. so andy is put on a pedestal for basically violating trademarks, but sheppard get's gunned down for redoing classic propagandist/leftist pieces?

sorry, i don't understand that. that makes absolutely no sense.

i agree, and i also think that people traditionally like to tear down artists that hold their ground on a simple foundation and build it on towards an empire, that someone like sheppard has done. they make easy targets in graffitti culture especially because of the whole starving artist stigma. you know, stay underground, and stay starving and all that bullshit.

sorry but this is 2008, and the starving artist purist thing is from 50 years ago. it costs money to be creative, so if someone wants to make money , let them.

futura 2000 took huge amounts of flack for doing clothing and toys from all the graf purists that viewed it as selling out. it was the most ridiculous hypocritical bullshit i've read. money is not the problem, it's just people perceptions.

really i think to me it comes down to the fact that all art in whatever shape or form is incredibly subjective, from the perspectives of both the artist and interpreter. beauty, meaning, and associated value, are all in the eye of the beholder.

and really, let's ask ourselves: why is it wrong to profit from art, something you may be inherently talented at, when it is arguably acceptable for someone like me to make a living working for a corporate? is it because of the stigma attached to being an artist, or because i am blatantly going down the corporate route and therefore perhaps already a lost cause?
i'm takin this show on the road.
