Alright mate, what sort of string sounds are you after?
Solo violins the most difficult one, as it's difficult to get it to sound vaguely realistic.
Found one a while ago that I tinkered with http://www.lnt.de/~stepe/demo/VSTPlugin ... ?&lang=eng
which is a free virtual modelling vst - seems capable of quite a lot of other noises besides. May take some programming though, but it don't cost anything.
If it's samples you're after try http://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MIS.html
They've got a project collecting multisamples of instruments, so you can find most orchestral instruments here. They're played at various velocities, so if you can set up your sampler to be velocity sensitive, you could get some quite varied layers here.
Checked the mp3 demo on Krakli of Stringz http://www.krakli.co.uk/freesynths.asp
and it sounded OK if you wanted fuller orchestral sounds, there's an mp3 demo if you want to hear how it sounds, quite a few other free vst's if you're interested.
A full list of the KVR vst database for strings can be found here

Depends what you're after, but I quite liked the strings on http://www.evmsynths.com/ultrasonique.htm - they're more synth than actual strings, but sounds pretty good.

4 my latest tune Shifter Riddim I got puuure "orchestra sets" and sampled em, sequenced the notes how i wanted, along with reverb and echo effects, then EQ'd each sequence in the channel to get a good contrast in sounds. distored some to mek it grimey instead of posh. i added a 10 voice chorus to some sounds to get power and hype. ill check out the edirol ting though stillos
