muffins are split into two before toasted, and yes they are more bready etc.
crumpets are one side only and have holes and that in the top
i finds it very hard to find the right level of toastedness for crumpets though, all too easy to burn them, but a soggy crumpet tastes like shit as well

To clarrify; Crumpets are similar to (English) Muffins but are less 'bready' and have holes in them, a bit like a golf course.
