THAT IS pretty funny that you are mentioning Dave Kinsey. because they practically started together with BlackMarket. He has just a different style. and I don't even see his work in the street no more. i mean beside outside is gallery in LA.solee wrote:he's shit
it's pretty simple. you make a sticker and place it all over town to make people think "hey, what the hell is this dumb sticker and what product is it trying to sell me" but it led to no product so it's now supposed to make you realize that you're so conditioned to advertising that you just had to figure out what that sticker meant cuz it coulda been this cool thing that you're missing out on.
i've always been more of a fan of his old partner Dave Kinsey. Now he is a badman

I don't think it is that simple to put your sticker all over the world. Well I put stickers up everyday in New York for a year and it is still pretty hard to see them. I Like street art and to me he is the one who putting slubliminal message to the head of all the people driving pass/walking pass. Saying MAKE LOVE NOT WAR - and Shooting flowers.... It is pretty simple but it makes you feel good. He is hardly negative and trying to be ironic with our dumb society.
That what he is about . It is not simply being conditioned to ads.
Graf/street art/tag is about Putting your NAME up Everywhere.

Spanish is great for embarassing typos, as above
I'd never heard of this guy before actually, sounds a bit like banksy-lite (although banksy is almost so played out as to lose any impact these days)
And use of leftist imagery in general really pisses me off, i've seen merchandise with marx's face on it, and the word "Unite".
Despite the fact that it was probably made in a sweatshop and is ridiculously ironic, karl marx was a beardy bastard with carbuncles, hardly the most trendy of images, really.

Well out of subject but an article about street art.

This has nothing to do with "selling out" or "staying underground," By all means if your talented you should make money off your trade, but passing off other peoples work as your own is fucked.nesslei wrote: and really, let's ask ourselves: why is it wrong to profit from art, something you may be inherently talented at, when it is arguably acceptable for someone like me to make a living working for a corporate? is it because of the stigma attached to being an artist, or because i am blatantly going down the corporate route and therefore perhaps already a lost cause?
In the quote by Picasso "Good artists copy, great artists steal." He most likely was reffering to taking the styles and aesthetics and not copying the entire piece.

Check out Todd Goldman's 'work'. He's a bit of a 'borrower', too, but he's shopping mall art aimed at girls who want to give the impression that they're sassy and kooky.
He got called out on his 'work'.
The wallet is pretty lame.
But yeah, I think the Obey product line is a completely different thing to the artworks. Its one thing to borrow/pay homage to (whatever you wanna call it) other artists work, when creating new art. Its a fine line of course... very similar to the whole sampling debate in music.
Another thing to use someone elses graphics on wallets, t-shirts etc, and put them into mass production. Which I don't think Fairey has done.

It's not that the guy is a plagiarist, it's that his idea are old and dead. He's a designer, not an artist, just like Banksy.
EDIT: That doesn't mean that his pictures aren't pretty and make the place look nice like.

designer, not an artist
He is an artist and design is an art too!!!

Art isn't about just making a picture though is it, or at least good art isn't. Sure there are plenty of terrible watercolour artists out there painting godawful pictures of barns in the countryside and they may fall under the term artist but what they make is essentially worthless. When I use the term art it is in reference to acts, images, creations that affect me in new ways. Fairey's work doesn't do anything new, it's in the same tired formula as a whole host of short sighted designers who're good with a brush. Banksy isn't an artist either, and apparently makes no pretensions to be one, but sometimes he can be viewed as an activist in that the placement of some of his works (in museums or galleries) causes us to look at those spaces in a different way.

Right! art is not about being crafty or whatnot and defining art is a all philosophic subject. but to me art is about showing an idea/concept/... using a medium in a interesting way/in a particular way. Banksy and Fairey are boths artists. Banksy has reached a different level with recent fame and he will have prob to kill his alias in order to move away from the public expectations.
and From All I know, nothing is new, everything has been done...[/b]
