Mental LFO waveforms.

Post by Hide_One » Tue Jan 22, 2008 3:25 pm

Im thinking about lending a Microkorg or something similar to experiment creating LFO waveforms with the vocoder. Is this possible or just stoned nonsense? Anyone know how i'll go about it? Soft Synths i usualy use are the Korg Legacy series and Cubase 4s Prologue, anyone know if i can use a vocoder alongside these.

Does anyone use a vocoder in production??

ok kool, but not very helpful.
I'd still like to try it and i'd like to know how you went about it. I've never used a vocoder before. And im sure playing around it's possible to produce decent sounds.

i vocoded some random vocal samples in the new one (check out my myspace in sig - tune is called goddess)

Vocoding gets really cool results when you start using strange samples rather than synths as the modulation source.

MicroKorg

Post by slva » Tue Jan 22, 2008 7:17 pm

Just make sure you 'borrow' the manual too.
I have a MicroKorg, you just select the vocoder bank and off you go, it's very easy to use. It comes with its own bendy mic, but also you can send a signal into a line in socket at the back, so you can apply effects to any incoming sound. Have fun! :)
(sorry Decklyn, you must have written that whilst I was typing... same as he says)

To create my synthetic LFO's i do the following..... (please dont tell anyone but this is my secret!)

Basically, you stick your finger inside your nanny's anus, and get her to hum the theme of eastenders, whilst kicking your dad in the bollox. Record all of this through a bean can, and you have the perfect sound for all occasions!

Shhh!

Don't get a Microkorg. Experiment with soft vocoders, like the one you get with Fruity. Get used to the process before you grab a synth, and if you do, get ANYTHING but a Microkorg

Do you actually mean LFO waveforms or general noises?

Vocoders are cool, you can get interesting stuff out of them by using them on sounds other than voices, and if you get bored you can pretend to be Kraftwerk.

The only bad things I've heard about the MicroKorg is that the keys are a bit flimsy, the interface is a bit minimal and the built in mic isn't much cop. Synthwise it's got the engine from the MS2000 which is supposed to be pretty solid for a VA, although obviously that's a matter of taste. I guess the vocoder's only 8 bands, which is kinda primitive particularly for doing comprehensible voices, but if you're just after mad noises I don't see that being a problem.

Not really, but there's a new thread recently posted, called 'the basics of synth', you should start there.

Good Luck.

really i just wanna make some mad noises and stuff, but i wouldn't mind experimenting with vocoders controlling certain aspects of the synth. For example I know that the vocoder allows the frequency curve of one sound to be imposed on another but was wondering if this frequency curve could be sent as MIDI information aswell to control for example, just the cutoff, or just the LFO depth etc. Ive tried writing the automation in or playing it live but reckon i can keep more of a groove and create subtle breathy noises by controlling it with a vocoder.
I think this spawned from listening to Oriens Look at my eyes, The Bassline seems breathy and so precise that it sounds to me as if it could only be controlled by a voice, albeit he'd sound like a prick whilst making it.
