Dub not 'Dubstep'

Post by dj vk - snakebite ent. » Fri Dec 21, 2007 3:01 am

I've recently got into a lot of the Dub stuff but am a newcomer to the sound.

Can anyone recommend anything? On the lines of King Tubby etc?

Thank you.

Vik.

Scientist I like

Tubby

Augustus Pablo

Check the record label Blood & Fire for some really good compilations

books; Lloyd Bradley's 'Bass Culture' and the Rough Guide to Reggae are worth having

hope this helps

Wicked mate. Thanks a lot.

Is there anything on the same BPM as some Dubstep? E.g. I can play the tracks side by side in a set and it will flow.

For example, playing a 2 Step Garage bit and still being able to mix tracks like Jay Z's 'Big Pimpin' into it?

Thanks.

erm I dunno

there's a couple of linval thompson tunes I've heard that seem to be pacier than your average, that might work - I've never thought about mixing it with dubstep really

I usually start a set with a little reggae. Ghostown by the Specials is nice, or some dubby vocal. Police in Helicopter for example.

It’s impossible to properly mix cos it’s live and unquantised, but if you kinda ease it in works nice to vary the pace of a set. Might have to go a little loopy with the pitch control though…

Although I'm not that well up the names I do know that there is a lot of good dub music coming out of France nowadays

I'll have to check out some of the names you've mentioned
