70 or 140 bpm?
personally i use 70
i know it really makes no difference... its just interesting seeing what others do =)

Who really cares? I mean, no offencee or anything, but if your track flows well and sounds great does it really matter how fast/slow it is?
I (and others out there) resent the pigeon-holing of genres and the fact people say the tracks have to be BPM this or sound like that.
Music is music and the great thing is we all hear it differently. Go with what you feel and if it sounds good to you, you can guarantee someone else will like it.
Rant over! Thanks...

Er I dont think he means making Dubstep ACTUALLY at 70bpm. He just means running the sequencer at 70bpm and then spacing the beats accordingly.psyphon wrote:Who really cares? I mean, no offencee or anything, but if your track flows well and sounds great does it really matter how fast/slow it is?

And yeah please do go with what you feel but if your making dubstep at 100bpm or any other crazy range just dont expect it to get played out much.
Re: 70 or 140 bpm?
It does make a big difference to me: if the scroll speed is faster you have more possibility for crazy snare rolls, retrigger effects and things like that.lilt wrote:personally i use 70

And your tracks actually seem faster and have more punch if you write them at high scroll speed. My experience tho.
Its Far Easier for me to use it at 140ish
As i feel it vibes better an if u fancy the change up /down u got scope to do that
peace

Hum I guess it depends on your host program then. I tend to forget they all work different about that.manray wrote:Dont see how.... At 70bpm you just put the sounds closer together. Down to 1/128th if you have to.
In Renoise, there's no scope or things like that so you have to increase the scroll speed if you want more flexibility.
Yeah, I know this is what he meant. What I meant is that why does there have to be all the unwritten rules about all genres of music and the specifics of tempo, etc.Er I dont think he means making Dubstep ACTUALLY at 70bpm. He just means running the sequencer at 70bpm and then spacing the beats accordingly.
Why can't a Dub Step track be faster/slower than the unwritten rule of sequencing at 70/140bpm?
That's what I meant about music being individual. If every producer created what was totally unique to them instead of following the lead of others (and this happens in every genre), then the genres of music would be so much less defined, and to me that's a great thing as you'd get much more appreciation from all angles.
to re-iterate this was not meant to be a discussion about genres, sub-genres, categorization or any other bollockspsyphon wrote:Yeah, I know this is what he meant. the simple questions is whether people use 70 or 140 to program for the purposes of comparing his/her own technique with others and discussing pros/cons of different programming methods - (the question could just as easily have been 75/150 or 90/180 etc ) - keep all that genre blabbery in the 'Dubstep' section
to answer the question -----
i had always gone in at 140 but have only in the last couple months taken it down to 70 for the additional space
no idea about renoise, i'm in live5
ehhh!?!? i've been making dubstep at 140/138 whatever for the whole time. didnt even know people made it at 70. im guessing u dont like DNB then?? i usually make that at 170-178, but my friends hardcore, he does it 180bpm?!!?!manray wrote:Er I dont think he means making Dubstep ACTUALLY at 70bpm. there are some seriously crossed wires here!AdDICT wrote: ehhh!?!? i've been making dubstep at 140/138 whatever for the whole time. didnt even know people made it at 70. im guessing u dont like DNB then?? i usually make that at 170-178, but my friends hardcore, he does it 180bpm?!!?!
make the tune at 70bpm - layout your beats accordingly and it plays double time hence 140bpm
the same way nu:tone writes some of his d'n'b at 90 which then in double time is 180
d'n'b is much more varied tempo wise than dubstep and tunes get pitched up by large margins to mix in
if you make a dubstep track at 100bpm it wont be played out much because it won't mix into a set as its too damn slow
this is really simple, wtf
Thats what i'm saying. Unfortuantely music designed for clubs cant be pitching up and down all night because thats dumb as fuck. If you want to make dubstep make it around 140. If you want to make dumbstep then make it whatever BPM you want and release your own ALBUM for listening outside of the clubsChunkie wrote:there are some seriously crossed wires here!AdDICT wrote: ehhh!?!? i've been making dubstep at 140/138 whatever for the whole time. didnt even know people made it at 70. im guessing u dont like DNB then?? i usually make that at 170-178, but my friends hardcore, he does it 180bpm?!!?!

Usually round 140... flipped the seq to 70 for a tune the other day and it did indeed have a different vibe.. dunno if it was takin the bpm down that changed it. Just changed the way I did things which is always good.
As my grandmother said "When your tunes are soundin rehashed and old, do summin diff and break the mould"

haha funnies
ive got a preference for using 70 cos it stops me from putting too many snares/hats etc. in
when i do it at 140 i just feel the need to fill the screen, and im not a fan of the way it ends up sounding...
but in reaper it is easy enough to zoom in/out so that only as many bars fill the screen as i want, which it seems is a limitation in other sequencers
