To all the D.J's out there, do you only play Dubstep?

Personally I like playing a whole range of different things in my sets, with Dubstep and Dub of varying sorts acting as the 'glue' that brings the other elements together. These can be many things, although a lot of it could be described as the brothers, sisters and distant relations of Dubstep, like Garage, Jungle, Techno, Electronica, Dancehall etc etc etc.

My question, then, is that among the DJ's who play out on this forum who only play other people's stuff, do you play exclusively Dubstep or do you like to mix it up a bit?

What do you play?

How have people responded to it?

There is the odd bit that isnt really under the dubstep banner but overall yes. I really want to be getting different stuff into the mix but it costs enough as it is keeping up with dubstep let alone other genres.

If I'm playing Dubstep I'll throw in some Grime, Bassline, old 2step, and a few random bits of other 140bpm ish stuff.
It's all just Garage innit.

need to mash it up with some different flavorZ!
Love to bring oldschool hiphop, dnb/jungle, electro, dub, reggae . . . into the mix!
I have found dubstep to be genius for building up to lots of other styles!

and this is definitely what makes the floor boil in Oslo . . .
people love to hear old bits from the early days of djing . . .

Yeah for real, its helped me to 'think outside of the box yar'. The main reason I play with a wide range of material is probably because there is no local scene for anything in particular where I live, so parties where anything goes are the order of the day!

some UK garage, grime, broken beats and breaks, reggae, dub, roots or electronics, funk, oldskool jungle even it is true since 2002 is more and more rare to be so freestylish from my side

mulatu was due to play at that same warehouse where the (shambolic) FWD>> 7th birthday party was at, the day after, but unfortunately couldn't get his visa sorted, was a shame as i rate him a lot from what i've heard

Mostly the older dubstep, few of the more garagey bits, quite a bit of house of various styles, hip hop (mostly 89-93 stuff), bits of old hardcore and a fair bit of jungle (not dnb so much).

Plus Herb Alpert, Elvis (Presley and Costello), James Brown, Louis Jordan and whatever else takes my fancy. Also managed to clear an entire room playing TV Song by Ministry ages back - gold star on the chart for that one

It might be annoying but it rarely gets boring

I should point out that I'm quite shit at mixing, but this means that I can go for similar vibes rather than smoothness. Plenty of things that go on well after each other that will never mix without Ableton (and if I had to contort them that much, why would I bother).

I started out as an eclectic dj, playing hip hop, broken beat, reggae, jazz, soul, funk, disco, boogie, afrobeat, dnb, techno, house, electronica etc all in one set ala Gilles Peterson/ Ross Allen. But since it's sooo feckin hard to please everyone all the time, i was happy to settle for a genre as strong as Dubstep.

Saying that, my radio shows on Sub FM start off with something from the vaults - be it Bill Withers or Herald of Change, then a smidging of Reggae and dubwise, then bit of 2step classic and then into ya dubstep riddims.

Nearly dropped a jazz tune on Wed. But bottled it

. Must have more guts next time, but you know who precious listeners can be..."what!!! this ain;t dubstep. Tsk. i'm off" Short sighted bastardios.

Probably play about 40-50% dubstep on the infrequent occasions that I DJ.

Any genre played on its own for a full set is boring..no exceptions. It becomes far too linear after about 10 minutes.

The trick is, only buy the dubstep that REALLY rocks your boat,and invest in buying recs in other genres so you can mix it up a bit.

Can only be good for the scene as a whole if people do this.

recently I have stopped playing tunes more than a couple of years old. I have been buying since 1990 and have a lot of tunes that make me smile but the fresh dubstep vibe and sound has me right now.
I find dubstep a broad enough genre to allow variety and like the bass. For me the only other genre with sounds as fresh and original is grime. Most other "new" music sounds old to me.
