Wiki: Dubstep

Post by deapoh » Tue Feb 05, 2008 10:30 am

I added one sentence in the Growth of Dubstep about Barefiles being one of the stepping stones attracting many international followers and each time I add it, someone deletes it. Did I not help make this scene grow in any way? There is some bollocks on there that is not important, does Barefiles full under this? Did it not help what so ever? Should I just shut down the site and save my money then?

Kaini is the guy deleting what I write saying it's "spam", give credit where it's bloody due. How the fuck was that spam? You might as well delete dubstepforum.com from there and say it's spam.

Does your log-in name at Wiki betray who you are? They don't like people adding information about themselves...PM me the lines you want in and where, and I'll try it for you.

If dubstepforum is mentioned then barefiles certainly should be.

I was adding it without a name but I have now signed up in the hope I can have a few words with whoever keeps removing the lines. If people want to modify and change history then please kill me, because whats done is done and theres no going back.

I doubt it's personal deaps - if I remember right there was a lot of trouble even getting dubstepforum on there. The crew at wikipedia were adamant that they didn't want anything at all that could possibly be misconstrued as advertising, and as a result their moderating of external links is kinda over-zealous. Loads of blog links were taken off and stuff like that when a couple of them in particular did really important things for the scene.

dubstep is more about people in front of big speakers than a website(wiki)
that goes with this forum aswell.

forgot about it...just keep working on tunes and let them do the talking

The list of "dubstep artists and artists who have releases in the dubstep genre" is well short.

The entry also fails to recognize many stateside heads who have contributed well to the music and generally recognized within the community. Or that there is a growing number of record labels based in the United States.

As far as I know the main reason for the limitations in the entry is that everything added requires published references. ie; mention in the press. For instance, I'm not mentioned in the wiki, but could be, with this reference:

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/f ... me-dubstep
The U.S. dubstep powerbase continues to grow around two lynchpins: Joe Nice and New York's Dub War parties. Most prominent of the new producers is Moldy. While a little sonically clean, Moldy has a good ear for melodies and a healthy work rate. Check Joe Nice's "ar-chives" for loads of Moldy riddims.
I just added myself to the list of dubstep artists, with two references.
We'll see if it sticks.

look, if one person starts adding links to forums and sites, it's opening the floodgates, and before long the article will lose its good article status (which only one in 600 odd articles has). i had no problem with leaving the link in at the end, but another regular editor removed that. if you want to add something, it has to be referenced, simple as that. find a ref from blackdown or something hyping barefiles, and it's gravy.

myself and two other editors worked very hard at getting the article to where it is now, and i'm not disputing how wicked a site barefiles is, but if we want to get the article to the front page, everything has to be referenced. it's absolutely nothing personal, it's just the way wiki works.

moldy's stuff is referenced, and you don't see anyone removing that.

^^ what kaini said makes perfect sense. they have to have some system to maintain order or else it's chaos. i remember the first version of that dubstep page was full of "reference needed" tags for nearly two years.

if you look at other wiki pages for grime, bassline, niche, electro, drum and bass...for the most part they're very well laid out and fair. it's a massive job to try and make sure everyone get's included in the pages, and you have to respect the system they have going. the references are critical because it establishes a background. if they didn't have the references then all wiki pages would turn into massive self promotion. wikipedia is not a myspace or a facebook, and should never be. the whole basis of the "creative commons" idea supports this.

deapoh, surely there's some published article somewhere with you listed in it. just link them to that.

imo, the dubstep wikipage should be constantly organic and changing, as this scene is changing, but it's important that we go with their proven system because we don't want the page locked down over constant editing and re-editing. that helps no one.

It should be there. Barefiles was pretty integral to the growth of the scene and it certainly would not be as big as it is now with out it. Petition those mother fherkers

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music which has its roots in London's early 2000s UK garage scene. The genre's name was coined by Ammunition Promotions. Musically, dubstep is distinguished by its dark mood, sparse rhythms, and emphasis on bass. Dubstep started to spread beyond small local scenes in late 2005 and early 2006, with many blogs and forums devoted to the genre appearing on the internet, most significant of these was arguably >gutterbreaks link<, >dubplate.net link<,>dubstepforum.com<and>barefiles link<

Would that keep people happy ?

My personal gripe is, the article seems woefully incomplete without mention of BREAKSTEP given it's shared roots. Surely it is more stylistically relevent than techno and the referenced twaddle at the bottom of the dubstep page?

Seems like someone is trying to rewrite history and taking a few liberties with the truth. I mean c'mon, no hotflush, no toasty and no scuba ? That's tantamount to heresy.
