burial ringtones...

Post by alfons » Thu Feb 07, 2008 1:34 am

came across a couple of these on the icelandic telecom website and was a bit shocked:

http://skemmtun.siminn.is/search.html?q=Burial

this is the biggest phone company in the country not some dodgy mp3 site.

can it really be legitimate? Selling ringtones kind of seems against the ethos of hyperdub/kode9 and Burial... ?

that would be quite jokes on the train, i'd have all the wannabe badmen from my college on the train with grime ring tones etc. then mine would go off all like "holding yooooooooou" and they'd just stop all their music and stare in disgust

I work in digital music and deal mostly with ringtone and full track content so i see the worst of it.
I still don't see a problem with RT's per-se, artists should be remunerated for their labour. But it may make you end up hating Burial if its played over and over as a RT. However it depends, I have Bob Marley as my ringtone and I never get sick of hearing Bob Marley.

Why does anyone have anything except a generic bleep for a ringtone? Is it so that when your phone rings on a bus and JX- Son of A Gun starts blaring out everyone knows that you like that song and therefore will sleep with you in the off chance that your spit will slide down their ears onto their brain and reconfigure their cerebral composition so that they can think and select ringtones like you?

some phones disallow that for just that reason. my old sidekick was an example. I guess I could have hacked it, but I wasn't so inclined. I used the default tones.
