Im not sure where the actual name derives from but the term "whip" I'm sure coems from a fad taking over california(U.S heads correct me if im wrong here) where by the youths stick there cars in auto, have music blasting out them, open the doors, get out and swagger alongside it in a, "check my ride" type manner..

this fad, I'm led to believe is called

"Ghostriding the whip"

You are correct with your definition of 'Ghostriding the whip', but the term 'whip' when refering to cars is much older than that...

Im not 100% on the origin of the term, but according to our friend Urban Dictionary...

"When the steering wheel was first put into use in automobiles, it was called the "whip". The whip is what you used to control the horses on a stagecoach, hence the analogy. Many years later, various hip hop artists noticed that the Mercedes-Benz logo resembled a steering wheel. They then proceeded to use the old term "whip" to describe any Mercedes-Benz vehicle. The term has now been generalized to classify any expensive automobile."

This strangely makes more sense than I thought it would...

Yea man, makes sense, I had just never heard of a motor being called a whip until my friend mentioned ghostriding...

It all depends on the automatic. There's also Tip and paddle shifts. Good enough for F1.
