House/Techno Education

Post by corpsey » Thu Feb 14, 2008 8:10 pm

I want to know

- What are/when are good nights in the UK that I can go to?

- What are good mixes to download?

- What are good CD compilations to buy? (Preferably stuff that educates about the history of either genre)

- What are good tunes (old/current) to check out?

Any youtube links or even links to articles/blogs etc. would be much appreciated. I've been listening to Maurizio- M4 just now and it's so good I reckon there must be stuff out there thats as good or better.

Techno: this is a good starter http://www.discogs.com/release/441574

Career spanning collection of shit by Juan Atkins, one of the main inventors of the genre.

I'm really getting into the dub techno stuff..

If you like the maurizio stuff check out all of the basic channel/chain reaction stuff

Also the Scion Versions (Substance & Vainqueur) releases have been amazing

T++ is getting a lot of press, and the echospace releases too

Boomkat is the best place to check for it.

I'm seeing Andy Stott, Surgeon and Clark in Mcr on saturday, first proper techno night so will be a new experience.

All readily available from boomkat as a download:

- Murmur - Undertone LP
- various Andy Stott
- Styrax label

and that's just more modern stuff. Regarding the original Detroit gang of Carl Craig, Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson et al. there's a vast ocean of music waiting...

mix wise check out Lenodd - Journey to the Red Planet which is made up of all Red Planet records stuff. Red Planet is sort of related to Underground Resistance. Speaking of which if you can find it check out the first Interstellar Fugitives compilation on UR.

check out the surgeon's site for whatever mix he has u at the time, normally they are fairly interesting. www.dj-surgeon.com

Nights:

Pure Filth in nottingham. Not sure when they are or how often they are Looks like the next one is on 1st March and best avoided, loopy banger stuff.

Lost in London - normally only on bank holiday weekends.

there's all sorts of nights about the place, a good place to check out whats on is http://www.littledetroit.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=2 though some things slip through the net.

Also there are two films that are well worth a watch (I am currently being educated by my house mate on Techno, he wears glasses and likes Gabber so is well qualified to do this);

'High Tech Soul' is a documentary about Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Carl Craig etc and the whole Detroit movement that started it all

'Modulations' is a more general look at the history of electronic music but also features a lot of info on Techno

Ideal for that skin up, sit down vibe on a Sunday night

you're going to BLOC aren't you? any of the following will be an education i think:

Underground Resistance presents Interstellar Fugitives
Joey Beltram
Juan Atkins
Ben Sims
Phuture 303 (live)
A Guy Called Gerald (live)
Monolake (live)
Sleeparchive - LIVE
Cristian Vogel and Ben Pest aka Black-E (live)
Convextion (live)
Claro Intelecto and Andy Stott (live)
Portable aka Bodycode (live)

Lakuti
Nick Craddock

the bold ones are the ones i personally would be prioritising, especially the top 4 if you're looking for history!

no love for beltram?
Can't wait to see him. His 'Live in Germany 1998' mix is one of my all time favourite techno mixtapes, total sickness imo.

Joey Beltram live in Germany 1998
Joey Beltram - Live in Germany 1998 Side A
Joey Beltram - Live in Germany 1998 Side B

I rinsed this tape almost to the point of wearing it out. Enjoy

We have booked DJ Pete aka Substance / Scion Versions to play in April at Corsica Studios (alongside Neil Landstrumm, Bass Clef and a load of others...)

Caught him playing a live set in some little strip bar down Hackney Road last year. Was really very good...

Check all the first and second wave Detroit shit. So important that you do. Only then should you proceed.

Still the Cybotron tunes like Techno City put a smile on my face that lasts for days.

Also, anything by Drexciya. Whether they would come under either a techno or house bracket is irrelevant. They're techno to me. And they are (or were) up there with the Belleville 3, UR, Carl Craig etc... Sometimes when I'm making tunes and struggling, I listen to a Drexicya record and it reminds me to stop fucking about and do something different. Be brave.
