i'm not sure about the sentences over there but surely there's a likelihood he won't serve the full four years if he behaves.

and really, he should have cleared his pockets. international DJ travelling every weekend couldn't remember to get rid of the evidence? :?

bummer for him, but you know what? he was one of the grumpiest DJs i ever met.
i'm takin this show on the road.

its his own fault. he knew the laws. he knew he had green and porn on him.

he obviously thought he was above the laws, or was too stoned to think properly.

i'm not saying its right for him to do four years, i'm saying he knew the risks and he was a fucking idiot for taking weed with him. he may smoke a lot of weed, but surely its gotta be worth stopping for 1-2 days if you're getting paid £4,000 to play one gig?

what a twat.

(WIKI)Muslim use

Generally in orthodox Islam, the use of cannabis is deemed to be khamr, and therefore haraam (forbidden). As with most orthodoxies, early practices differ in this.[citation needed] Some say that, as hashish was introduced in post-Koranic times, the prohibition of khamr (literally, "fermented grape" but generally understood to mean anything that clouds consciousness) did not apply to it.[citation needed] Others point to various hadith, which equate all intoxicants with khamr, and declare them all haraam, "if much intoxicates, then even a little is haraam".[citation needed]

Although cannabis use in Islamic society has been consistently present, often but not exclusively in the lower classes,[citation needed] its use explicitly for spiritual purposes is most noted among the Sufi. An account of the origin of this:

According to one Arab legend, Haydar, the Persian founder of the religious order of Sufi, came across the cannabis plant while wandering in the Persian mountains. Usually a reserved and silent man, when he returned to his monastery after eating some cannabis leaves, his disciples were amazed at how talkative and animated (full of spirit) he seemed. After cajoling Haydar into telling them what he had done to make him feel so happy, his disciples went out into the mountains and tried the cannabis for themselves. So it was, according to the legend, the Sufis came to know the pleasures of hashish. (Taken from the Introduction to A Comprehensive Guide to Cannabis Literature by Ernest Abel.)

In addition, the warrior sect of the Hashashin were said to have eaten hashish before their assassinations and were given the name "Hashasin" accordingly. This notion, traditional in the West, can be inferred from Marco Polo's account of his travels, though it has been widely disputed.[10]

+some guy i was at college with who's parents were muslim convinced me.
sorry i'll get my facts right

I'd rather not go anywhere near that God forsaken country, it's more trouble than it's worth. Any country where a woman is sentenced to 6 months in jail and is given 90 lashes because she was gang raped is not somewhere I'd want to even be within 500 miles of.

Lets not quibble over it.

The fact is the man has been put away for FOUR YEARS over this, he may or may not be an idiot but I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Well maybe some.

Well OK quite a few people but the point remains, the man has a wife and kids and his friends and family must be devastated.

Have some respect.

Word. I can totally imagine how something could get caught up in your clothes or forgotten about (whatever actually happened). Totally sucks for anyone in that position regardless of who they may or may not be.

Don't get me wrong, there are people I'd like to see punished - but I'd rather feed them into a wood chipper.

It's his own fault, i'm not going to feel sorry for him.

if i was going to dubai to dj for £4000 or so, i'd leave the weed at home for when i get back. its not worth the risk, and if you think it is, you deserve to go to jail.

seriously, if he was DESEPERATE for a smoke, why didn't he give his shit to one of his fifteen yes men that were surely travelling with him?

How can you be sure it wasn't a genuine mistake? In which case, it's more careless oversight than blatant stupidity.

I've heard similar accounts. But I think that's kind of an "evolution" on some sort of Islamic jurisprudence practiced on occasion in some of the more conservative Arab nations. The law itself isn't really cut-and-dry, and can be interpreted a variety of ways. Typically the charge is for something like "being alone without a man related to you." BBC reported on a similar case. Keep in mind this hasn't been reported in Dubai, although I wouldn't really doubt it, as punishments like that have been handed out in response to ambiguously illegal things (such as being raped).

fair point, fair point, but if he's a stoner he will know where he weed is and he will know he is going to want to smoke it when he gets through customs.

i seriously doubt he didn't know it was there. i'm still thinking its his own fault, he probably thought he could get away with it because he's an A-list dj.

bottom line is, he shouldn't have been stupid enough to try and get weed into dubai. if he was desperate, why not try and get some after you get off the plane? being stoned is NOT worth the risk of going to prison in dubai!

not sure if it's right to start blaming islam in broad strokes.

it's true that islam isn't an adaptable or progressive religion, but it's influence is massive in middle eastern culture and more specifically how it views cultural "freedoms". i wouldn't say that it's responsible directly for the harsh laws though.

thailand for example, has buddhism as it's dominant religion and has ferocious drug laws.
japan is shintoist for the most part, and also has very strict drug laws.

this is more an issue of culture clash than anything else. many parts of the world and the middle east views our common western freedoms (arguably, drug use being one of them) as a detriment to our way of life. from that very stern outlook on the west, we're already corrupted and damaged as broader globalized societies.

she was sentenced for perjury and something about attempting to sway the jury using the media, not for being raped.
