At the end of the day, Dubai is a moderate Islamic state. Women have a lot more rights than most other Islamic countries, and they're open to dialogue (and inevitably, Westernisation).

But don't take the piss. They're compromising anyway, don't test their mercy. They could shoot/stone/beat you to death and write it off as Radical Islam - but they don't!

I agree with you here to an extent, the idea of women as slaves that are vehemently hated probably isn't true. I certainly feel sorry for the guy, but there's a certain amount of due diligence that should be taken before traveling into *any* foreign countries with customs and values that differ from your own. You may not agree w/ the rules, or even like them, but for the time you are there....they are the law(s) of the land.

If I were traveling to Dubai, Singapore, or some other semi-police state you'd better believe I would be shaking down my pants and triple washing my shirts before leaving. Hell, I saw "Midnight Express"....some prisons in this world are no fucking joke

Dead on. It might be unduly harsh compared to other laws, but fucking hell, learn about the place you're going to before you go there. There's no excuses. I'm sure Mr.Rider is on the internet, so he could have done some Wiki research and now be safe at home eating his cornflakes, instead of in cockroach infested murder hole.

They don't obviously don't fuck around.

At least he can write a book of his experiences when he comes out.

I don't know the ins and outs of saudi or dubai law, but I'm sure there's a lot of misconceptions and assumptions in the west that are miles wide of the mark

thats pretty much the case. when i lived there, a lot of westerners didnt know the exact laws, so as a general consensus, people would just try to act maturely, and not do anything there that would be illegal in their home country.

that and my mom would wear an abaya (the black thing) and bring my dad when she would go into the saudi city.

I've always found it quite strange that Amy Winehouse and other celebrities can be in the papers constantly with reports of their drug use but the police mostly do nothing. Same with city bankers and cocaine use, who quite likely get through more drugs in a week than most dealers.

Don't really agree with the drug laws (think it perpetuates gangsterism and rehabilitation would be more effective in treating addicts than prison) but does smack of hypocrisy.

Yeah i never understood that. But then i guess if you look at the state of her lately it's a pretty effective warning of the negative effects of drugs.

Maybe so, maybe not. The point is that the UAE wont give a shit. Diplomatic talks are probably the only way that it would be sorted and I doubt thats going to happen. If he does get off it will be down to his legal team, not that petition
