As far as Canada goes...
Kuma could tell you about Vancouver. And DeepSix about Toronto. Jungle kids haven't really cottoned on to it which is strange given how big DnB still is in TO.
Ottawa is quiet and loves its indie rock. We've got one good shop which has stocked all of the bigger releases (Rephlex, Mu, 679 as well as Bingo and, oddly, a couple of difficult to find Mark One 12"s). I haven't met another person face to face who's into it, but there are a few grime heads.
I'm looking for a couple of DJ gigs in the new year to test it out on the locals.

as far as america is concerned, it's all about taking a bit of a risk. one of the thing's i'm trying to do with the Soulfire night is to present it in a way that people from the reggae, breaks, brokenbeat and dnb scenes can all relate and immediately vibe out to it. i think one of the problems that we face with the rephlex albums, is that people automatically lump this scene in with grime. this includes the venue bookers as well. they've never heard of hotflush, but they've all heard about the grime 1 & 2 albums. it can't be presented as a grime night, because that's just going to precipitate the confusion further.
another thing i'd like to see happen in 2006 is that we start planning tours and sharing travel costs like the dnb network does. that way we can start doing 10 date east-west-north-south tours. onward and upward.

I'm in Geneva, Switzorland. Moved here from Bristol about 6 months ago (clever move hey?). Haven't heard any dubstep played out here apart from Kode 9 a couple of months ago, completely by chance, he wasn't on the flyers. He put me in touch with the guy who'd booked him (cheers for that !) so hopefully we can arrange some kind of giggage... There's a decent record shop called Mental Groove, that has a few good tunes in stock, but there's not obviously a market for it. But Geneva will dig dubstep when it gets going, if only cos they smoke so much weed round here...

Hey man, where in Switzerland are you? I'm in Geneva....bp wrote:yeah, props to hungary! my mother is from budapest![]()
here in switzerland there's plain nothing... no scene, no dj's playing this sound. and no shops with stock, so i just know this sound from countless heavy mixes (no money at the mo' for orders from boomkat).
even the heads who are deep in jungle/drum'n'bass just don't know what dubstep is all about - i was pretty disapointed when i found out.
sorry for my english...

Yeah, I will probably be there - find myself in that club a LOT... Don't think the dnb half of the night will be up to much, but some decents breaks could be good...BunZer0 wrote:Hehehe some FWF members will play there this week end :triac wrote:I'm in Geneva....

That's pretty much what we're doing. Dubstep headliner, jungle, electro and dancehall in support. If you don't like what you're hearing now, you will later. An easy way to break the sound to the locals..
Vancouver has one grime night which on average does alright..it's breaking the sound to the kids....the idea is to take risks..develop the north american network and get larger UK names in as time and funding allow..kinda like I'm doing with kode9..
big tings though..it's a bright future..

I'd try talkin to Leo at the Amoeba in LA, he might be able to get you dubstep.-40 khz wrote:Not much here in Los Angeles, but things r getting better I think. U can find some Skream/Search and Destroy stuff at amoeba, but thats pretty much it. no real nights-just a couple of scattered djs here and there... Anybody in the LA area interested in starting something up? : )
As mentioned, San Francisco has something of a scene going; just saw plasticman + vexd up there this weekend, actually.

Chicago is actually starting to rep dubstep proper, which is nice. We do a grime/dubstep monthly here at a DNB bar with a wicked turbosound system and people actually seem to be feeling it. The amazing part is that the nights are like half girls.
It's mostly just Nogunri and me pushing the dubstep side of things, but we do get a lot of support from the DNB and garage/grime crowds, which is good.

Over here in Ghent , Belgium we are with a few guys who listen play and produce grime/dubstep.
I think the scene in belgium is still small because this is still a new genre that only a few play and the records are hard to find, or u have to order via the net.
We had some guys who came over DMZ Mark One Plasticman and crew at Le gazon Brussels (Free massive party), Roll Deep in Ghent (14 people ) Dizzy in Brussels (Sold out),Vexd in ghent (80 people).
Me and some other guys have a weekly radioshow, "After 12" ,every friday from 00h till 02h on http://www.urgent.fm
We play all kinds of uk music lots of grime and dubstep ,hip hop ,jungle...so we try to promote it.

I am the scene in my town! (Austin, TX)
there are a couple of broken beat djs that will throw a dubstep tune or two into their sets, but there are no nights or many people that really even know about the sound.
Hopefully that will change soon as I am starting a dubstep night at the same club where I hold my long running DnB residency.
Time to educate.

yeah, same here... but zurich has more parties and a pretty vibrant nightlife (ok, mostly house and minimal techno), so it could happen that i'm the first of us to send pmstriac wrote: Cool. I'll send you a PM if I hear of any more dubstep being played here, although I don't expect anything soon!
