Yes.

So on topic, is there anyone (apart from Dusk and yourself) who you'd say are pushing in this direction?

Martyn, Geiom (Reminissin), Whistla, Sully, Shonx, Narcossist, TRG, Untold for a start

but i think a few, as Blackdown says, are already way down the road in terms of taking 2step / garage rhythm in new directions... Mala, D1, 2562, Peverelist, Hessle guys, Silkie

There's loads man, even something as austere as Pangaea's Coiled has a garage rhythm - is just an absurdly reductionist take on it. Shonky, Darkstar, Sully, TRG, Untold, Toasty, Nine, Compound One crew . Theres's plenty more than just those..

edit: beat me to it elgato:)

Cool - some I know, some I need to check out.

I guess this is only partly a thread for my information, and partly about getting people to shout out the stuff they're feeling / give some appreciation. Thought it might be a nice flipside to (and more productive than) endlessly complaining about the ploddy / trudgey stuff. :)

I guess Shackleton is up there in the not actually 2-step but doing mad things with percussion, too.

Also  Mala. I don't understand why there are so few people working in the same vein as him, except maybe that he's so damn good noone else wants to go near it...

like to add...not only percussion, but the soulfulness is something i find lacking. like somebody put a piece of themselves into the music. more of a vibe, something you can't define w/drum patterns. either there or it's not.

a lot of on point stuff here, nice thread

only one thing I feel the need to weigh in on (can't resist..)
Shonky wrote: Being serious though, I do think that a lot of music that came from folks who's pretty much only way of getting out of a fairly bleak future was by music do have a completely different mindset to those that just have it as one of several options that they can venture into on their career path.
I completely agree, but I also think that it's a bit ridiculous to suggest that the middle classes are exempt from living out 'bleak futures', and by definition treating music as a career path...

once it gets retained, i'm curious about the new possibilities for percussion, though tbh people like Mala are already rhymically miles ahead (Learn, Bury the Bwoy etc...).
YES

don't forget about the beats!
Corpsey wrote:It'll come back because people will realise that 2 step beats are live to dance to.
yes yes yes!

there's nothing in dubstep anymore that replicates the sound of the slow transition into the intro beats of Nude - Digitize or a Horsepower track or even the intricate, syncopated snares of something by Gurley. Base the music around a 'half-step beat' template, however loosely, you're confining the music to such a limited rhythmical structure that it
just
gets
boring

it's not about one thing or the other

it's just not about confining yourself to anything.

im not entirely clear on what you mean... are you saying that no middle class people aspire to 'vulgarity'? and are you demarcating 'vulgarity' as strictly the product and remit of 'lower' class people?
Shonky wrote:You can't really aspire to something if you already have it. Music born of struggle and escaping humdrum reality generally has more fire to it than music to match your soft furnishings
these two need separating straight away. further, do you think that frustration with humdrum reality and a need to escape is exclusive to poor people? i would also say that people can struggle in many contexts
haha EVERYONE wants to escape the boredom of "reality" standard. i get wot shonky is saying i agree with him to an extent. but arguably alot of dance music is spawned from black culture - that is going to explain why why alot of bassline / funky house at the moment is coming out of black society and producers

Ez..
I've jumped on this post a bit late, but if you're looking for Dj's who are backing 2-step then you need to check out the United Vibe show,Sunday's 21:00-23:00 GMT on the mighty Sub FM!

I can guarantee that you'll hear a slice of the best 2-step from the vintage years in pirate radio each and every week, plus whole stack of prime time beats from past to present..re producers backing 2-step and experimentally percussive tracks, check out Infiltration Vol.1/2 by LHF and the respective myspace's for the featured artists.

Links for both have been posted up in the mix section.
