Live 7 and Midi Controllers

Greetings.

Beyond faffing around with FL, I'm fairly new to production. One thing I have discovered all ready is that using a mouse and keyboard isn't very fun at all and I'm hoping to start using midi controllers. Unfortunately I know next to nothing about the subject.

I'm looking for a compact setup that meshes well with Ableton Live 7, I'm taking bare bones. Where do I start?

I know this is super vague and I'm not the first or last to ask this question, so thanks for your time.

Get a bluetooth dongle and a wii controller and control your music with that, great fun!

It wouldn't be analogue controllers, it would be MIDI. but I'm just nit-picking.

Do you play any instruments?

Traditional instruments? no, sadly. :[

Like I said, i know pretty much nothing about controllers. I guess I should have started by asking for a few type descriptions first.

for example, in this picture I see 2 controllers, what are they?

The keyboard is the m-audio oxygen. Don't know the other one just looks like a small mixer.

Take a look at the m-audio axiom 25 on google. Great little midi keyboard with assignable drum pads so u can load drum samples into your DAW and tap away on the drum pads. There's a pic of it in my setup in the thread where you got that picture from.

I use the M Audio 02 and it works great. With Abelton you will usually have to assign the MIDI yourself but thats not really a big deal. Just go on youtube or google and look up a tutorial for "assigning MIDI in Abelton"
or read the tutorial that comes with the program.

Be careful with M-Audio though, their drivers are well known for having stability issues, can really piss me off from time to time.

Get something with a fair amount of knobs and sliders too, makes automation a whole bunch of fun.

i've a Behringer UMX49 USB/Midi Contoller Keyboard even though its behringer its lasted me a while now. paid £110 it :)
