Take a guy like Timbaland, or Justin Timberlake, or the Neptunes, they ARE making music that they love. As are bands like Coldplay, REM, Muse, U2. It just so happens that their music is bankable. And these are not guys who conform to 'music industry' standards when they come along. They have their copycats and the higher they climb in their careers, the more they are assimilated, as the charts get swamped by soundalikes, but all of them have at one time or another in their careers been the progenitors and/or resurrectors of their own sounds.

Not all pop is manufactured from day one.
