'real' instruments.

So for a long while now I have been searching for a/some VST(s) what produce life-like sounds of instruments.. like Guitars, Piano, brass, string, blah blah blah so on and so on.

Free or not, can anyone recommend some!? I got Orchestra off a mate to play about with and I find everything but the strings are pretty poorly done! Also the free Sax vst (DVS SAXOPHONE) is pretty nice but I am looking for something (if there is any) what has at least one of each kind ( like a good selection of Brass or strings).

Unfortunately, nothing will really sound like the real thing in my opinion. Don't get me wrong I don't mind synths that emulate horns and strings, but I don't expect them to sound like the real thing.

Just gotta do some sampling I think. Or learn and record yourself, which would be even better

Sounds fair enough.

It is quite tiresome trolling through endless FTPs and sample websites trying to find something what -could- work. Personally I hardly fine samples what work for me how I would want them to. Maybe I am just a bit hard to please!?

Yeah lots of the times samples won't work how you evision it, but personally I find shoe-horning them into tracks can be quite fun and challenging and sometimes comes up with something really absract and original that you would have never thought of if it was just you, your vst and keyboard.

And i'd suggest rather than downloading samples from the web (which can be good), just go hit up the 5 dollar cheapo CD bins at the local music shops... Grab anything that looks like it has interesting instrumentation. I've found lots of gems this way, and still have heaps of CD's to go through. It's a bit more time consuming, but I find it pretty fun, and hugely rewarding that you have a sample that isn't downloaded by every two bit producer

Also had a play on Linplugs Saxlab. It doesn't have the variety of instruments you're looking for but does have some impressive sax sounds and some lush flute presets. What production software are you running?

Ive heard about sample tank, my mate raves about it, said its what he draws for first when making a track so I guess I'll check it out!

I'm running FL7 rewired into Reason4, though sometimes I just use FL or Reason.

@ Tempest, yeah I guess I should just try and found something more challenging then just a 8 bar sample of a couple of strings.

you can get by with Sampletank, Reason Orchestral Soundbank and as mentioned EWQL Symphonic stuff.

I actually prefer the syntheticity of the aforementioned over live played instruments. Unless we're talking about dirty samples, that is.

Live stuff is so stale most of the times (cfr the horrendous St Germain albums post-boulevard or the Dkay live dnb album, but hey that's one man's opinion)

Garritan's instrumental libraries are supposed to be pretty good, and are a bit less pricey.

This sort of thing's always going to be fairly expensive, though - producing a complete set of high quality multisamples of every instrument in an orchestra played in every way someone might want to play it isn't cheap...

Z3ta is a great synth and i've made patches that sound like raw, authentic clavinets and rhodes... infact if you check lounge dub on my myspace that has my clavinet patch in it.

To be honest though, your best bet is sampling or recording.

Requires some chopping and layering but these are good quality sounds in all octaves at various velocities.

It's also worth listening to players of the various instruments and observe the phrasing of their melodies. If you can start thinking like the player of the instrument, you're more likely to create convincing parts (if realism is what you're after)
