VST Recommendations

Post by wub » Thu Mar 06, 2008 4:56 pm

Below is a list of free VSTi's that I use and find to be top quality....

1. dBlue Glitch - VST - Windows Only - Overview: Absolutely wicked plugin for doing glitched-work FAST. You can sequence out glitch-sequences in it, which is highly enjoyable. Great for LIVE-work.

2. Killa Pluggies 2006 Collection - VST - (Windows Only?) - Overview: A SOLID set of very standard/backbone/core-type plugins. Plugins are: Phaser, Chorus, Flanger, Autopan, Distort, and Detune. The GUI is a touch cheeze, and they seem to be slightly heavy on the CPU (for what they are) -- but hey, they're damn fine in my opinion.

3. Gargoyle
Overview - Evil bastard 3xOsc synth capable of producing some absolutely evil sounds out of it, good for atmospheric bubblings

4. Dub Siren
Overview - Single Osc dual LFO synth, good for making acidic style squelchings and general other siren influenced madness.

5. ReeseMX
Overview - bassline generator

6. BlockFish
Overview - Powerful compression VSTi, once you get to grips with it's simple to follow GUI, adds character to depth to nearly every sound your produce

7. Saturated Driver
Overview - Something between a limiter and compressor used to shape peaks.

8. Crazy Ivan
Overview - Straight up balls to the wall chaos. Manipulate sounds so they're not remotely recognizable...it's a drunk, wobbling, slurring vst.

9. SupaTrigga
Overview - Good for stutters..not as programmable as glitch..but I like the output a bit more. It is a bit of a cpu whore.

10. Delay Lama
Overview - super-cheeze GUI VSTi of a chanting monk, but has a really effin' cool unique sound. Just one patch, but still sooooo nifty.

11. CamelCrusher
FX plug in - great for thickening up drums and adding a bit of dirt to bass and synth lines.

12. Kjaerhus Classic Series
Especially the Compressor and Reverb. No gimmicks, no bells or whistles or any kind of showing off in the coding, just good high-quality back-to-basics plugins.

13. Antress Modern
You'll be hard pushed to find these. They're legal in the sense that they're free to install and use, but illegal in the sense that Antress ripped off a lot of companies, notably Solid State Logic, by stealing their DSP algorithms and interfaces for these plugins. If you can find them, you will never, ever find a better set of free EQ plugs.

14. LiveCut
It is a live beat-slicer but instead of manipulating equal chunks of audio like most beatslicer do, it works on the notion of audio cuts whose length and number of repetition depends on the context and the cutting procedure. cuts are organized in blocks which then form a phrase. see Image below. And each phrase can be ended by a roll or fill.

15. TAL-BassLine
Togu Audio Line releases TAL-BassLine, a virtal analog bass synthesizer especially made for bass, acid sounds and effects. It’s based on a robust core and has the usual controls of analogue hardware synthesizers.

16. Crystal
Crystal is a semi-modular software synthesizer featuring both subtractive synthesis and frequency modulation (FM) synthesis.

17. SPAN
SPAN is a real-time FFT spectrum analyzer plug-in. For the most part it was derived from GlissEQ and CurveEQ professional equalizers and it reproduces their spectrum analysis functionality.

18. PSP VintageMeter
PSP VintageMeter (free plug-in VST, RTAS, MAS, AudioUnit for MAC and VST, RTAS and DirectX for PC hosts) provides professional VU and PPM metering for mono and stereo tracks. All parameters like integration times and reference levels are widely adjustable to make this free plug-in suitable for any application.

19. PlugSound Free
Plugsound Free includes 64MB of specially programmed sounds from the 6 Plugsound volumes.

But yes, Kjaerhus is cool. Considering to buy some plugin (GEQ7) from Golden series, but is this company alive? In the forum there is no sign from them :?

Nice job. Added to the bible.

My 2 cents, not a VST but definitely worth notifying:
Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch: This is a program for stretching the audio. It is suitable only for extreme sound stretching of the audio (like 50x) and for applying special effects by "spectral smoothing" the sounds. It can transform any sound/music to a texture.
