[Tutorial] Recording audio off of YouTube

Post by wub » Thu Mar 06, 2008 1:19 pm

A mate of mine was stuck at his Mum's house for a few days and wanted to collect some samples without having to install any new software on her laptop.

I wrote him this little guide on how to do it, using standard software that comes bundled.

Recording Audio Off YouTube

- Right click on the volume button in the bottom right of the screen to display your master volume control and select 'Properties'

Image

- Select 'Recording', then check the box that says 'Stereo Mix'

Image

- Click ok

- Now open up your recording package. For the purposes of this, I'm using Sound Recorder as it comes with Windows

Image

- Press record on Sound Recorder, then start your YouTube video off. Recording off YouTube sound should now take place.

- When you've finished, hit stop on the Sound Recorder and save as

Image

- You can save the audio file in with different setting using the 'Change' button

Notes

- Sound recorder only does a maximum of 60s; anything longer, you'll have to use something else. I recommend Audacity as it's free

- Check your soundcard settings before doing this, seperate volume control panel might be needed to record at a decent level.

...or you could just download the video using Tooble (free, mac only) and then use quicktime pro to export the audio to a WAVE file.

Use Audacity to slice the sample, and boom.

If you're on a mac you can use Soundflower from cycling 74 to record any audio... http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower

or simply plug your headphone into your line-in and hit record on your DAW
