there are up quarks, down quarks and strange quarks... maybe some other types too i can't remember fully...

i likes physics me i do... :6:
up, down, strange, charm, top, bottom....

you get leptons too

i like supersymmetry just for the names....

leptons---> Sleptons (a particular fave)

does any1 know gd links to stuff that albert eistine dun, like relativity, and any other mind blowing stuff 2 do with physics? i read a "horrible science" book about physics when i was twelve lol, ever scence then i love that shit!

science is searious

the only B i got in gcse (double science bang bang)
c in maths n failed everyfin else :)
edited for clarity

this is way better than the science "debates" on http://www.newraveorder.com which is a U.S. raver forum. check it if you want a laugh

please dont think all americans are as dumb as the people on there though. i swear we're not

nice to see this sort of thing in the hideout. i love thiis shit it is the most interesting subject evaaaaa
they are looking for several things in the LHC, Higgs ting as mentioned earlier and also the Graviton, a theoretical massless particle that would prove quantum mechanics' role in gravity, and would link Einstein's general relativity with QMechanics which has pretty much been the biggest goal in science since dayaaah.
there are 4 forces in our universe, Gravity (shitty and weak compared to the others), Electromagnetic (this is basically light, electricity, magnetism) and the strong and weak Nuclear forces which hold together atomic nuclei and create nuclear radiation respectivley.
They all have "messenger" particles that relay information to other force and mass particles around them. All forces but gravity have identifiable messenger particles;
Electromagnetic - Photon
Strong NF - Gluon
Weak NF - Weak Gauge Bosons (W+Z bosons)

if the Graviton is detected it would lead to a far greater understanding of the relations between these forces and hopefully lead to a unity of both General Relativity and QMechanics.

also heres a mental thought that shows how weak gravity is, if you drop a ball onto the floor it doesnt go through the ground, it bounces. that means the (non-gravitational) forces at work in that square cm where the
ball hit the floor completely overruled the entire pull of the earth on said ball. A current idea knocking around in M-Theory is that gravity is actually as strong as all the other forces but Gravitons flit through many universes (or parts of the Multiverse), including ours, and so the strength is shared out and only APPEARS to be weaker when observed from a single 'verse. wow long post. sorry

you forgot supersymmetric particles - if they (or at least something very like them) dont turn up, it's back to the drawing board for a lot of theorists... the most hilarious thing is that there's this little tin pot experiment (searching for the electric dipole moment of the neutron) in Grenoble that cost about £40k to put together that, in the last 30 years, ruled out more theories beyond the Standard Model than all other experiments put together... and yes that includes multi billion pound accelerators.... just by tweaking magnetic fields.

my old supervisor used to say particle physics too often works on too aggressive a basis really - it's a bit like trying to work out how a swiss watch works by smashing it to pieces with a hammer and looking at the pieces leftover...

fun though ;)

Ahhh, sorry. I only noticed this several months too late. Forgot my password for Jim Beats ages ago so now I don't post as triac. Basically the fckin LHC took over my life and made me give up dubstep, and sleep. But me old mucker Rob sent me some congratulatory beats on Wednesday, after our first beams, so I thought I'd check up what the dubstep world has been up to while I was away. Big up dubstepforum for all the LHC threads... Good to see all the interest in this, makes it feel worthwhile. :D
