Post by djprojekts » Tue Mar 11, 2008 4:07 pm

Hi all im just wondering if any one can point me to any help on making bassline's like coki does? Dont get me wrong though im NOT wanting to copy coki but i would want to know how you make those disgusting messy sounds like he does weather its a VST or a piece of production software or even simply patches, Any help on this would be great!!

(I will say again because someone on here will say i wanna be like coki but thats entirly not true, i want those similar sounds)

I hear that Reason's Thor plays a part.
a lot of it sounds like NI Massive to me.

hope that helps. Sounds like that are not too hard to recreate.
maybe try layering a couple of saws and squares, slightly detuning them and then filtering them to taste. Most of the time you can achieve a coki-esque midrange sound.

Thor fucking rules.

That bit of kit makes some serious sounds.

Use and abuse.
Bored of the same old fucking shit.

I'd start messing around with oscillator sync and FM options (as well as a lot of very in depth automation and programming) if I was after that metallic / robotic type sound. Maybe synced noise? Maybe comb filtering or formant filtering as well? Not sure...

well said. don't get ahead of your self. otherwise youll spend hours making a bass line that you're genuinely surprised and pleased with but really sounds like shit.

Resample like the DnB peeps.

It's easy to make the sounds your own doing resampling.

Samplers have similar engines to synths.

We had Loefah up here a couple weeks ago and i was chatting to him about it. Unfortunately i was two fucked to remember what he said  But it definately wasn't your usual layer a couple of sawtooths, bit of lfo whatever.
I think he was saying he used a mad about of diffrent waveforms, saturated/distorted them to the point where they sounded disgusting ( not even good disgusting) then used spider (im not familiar with reason at all, but i believe it's some sort of splitter) and filtered after that. He was also saying something about using mutes to and automating pitch and volume all over the place. I know what ive just said is about as useful as a chocolate tea pot, but im bored so i though it contribute.

EDIT: yeah thor makes sum dutty noises, i seariously have no control over it yet thoe :( , i betta start usin that green grid thing i guess!

the closest noise i ever made 2 that was a variation of hip hop lead on subtractor, i made the shakey kinda effect with sympol note variations and portimento set up a peice :? , wasnt happy with it thoe.

The shapers in Malstrom and Thor set to saturation are essential :!:

Coki’s Bass lines don't sound like anything particularly unachievable in a simple 2or 3 osc synth (pitched osc’s) with plentty of filter and LFO action.

I’ll just say…

It’s great what can be achieved by sitting in front of a synth for a few evenings just designing sound (don’t get impatient) …and only design sounding, saving your patches/settings for a later time. I spend a lot of time just making noise, more so than writing tunes, it can be very worth while and a lot more rewarding than going through a bunch of presets in the hope that there is one setting which is not quite what you’re after but almost like what you’re after.

thats all I am doing right now. Thor is over my head and all I am doing with it is pushing random buttoms on half the machine lol
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
