Dubstep and the media

Post by bass operator » Tue May 23, 2006 2:08 pm

I'm currently writing an essay for college about how music genres develop and grow and i thought dubstep would be a good scene to write about.

I've been trying to find articles on dubstep. I have not found too many and the ones i have found just seem to talk about a small section of the scene ie. dmz, skream, kode 9

Has anyone got any links to articles on hotflush, boka, storming, destructive? I'm surprised there has not been more mentioned about the people behind these labels/producers/djs - they all seem to work hard in pushing the genre too.

you should write it about how dubstep has grown and developed DESPITE the media. the reason you can't find the articles you describe is because there aren't really any. because...

the dance music press is shite
the mainstream music press is worse
the mainstream press' music coverage is even worse than that

and i say this as a journalist, sigh. all the good stuff you will find will be on t'internet

I've got used to the dance music press being shit and the mainstream music press being shit - i think everyone has to be honest.

But even the internet does not look much better - i still cant find much press on the above labels i've mentioned - i've noticed the dubstep writers, bloggers only focus on a few labels, producers.

The photographic medium may be something interesting to look at

Also how dubstep has evolved in trends - ie shift away generally from UK garagey style. Those old big apple records i picked up the other day are pretty different in style to the stuff benga, DMZ and skream are now doing

perhaps also look at mixes on barefiles.com - compare old with new

mention perhaps how dubstep may never expand beyond a certain level, due to the main emphasis being on sub bass. most tinny radios have trouble with a kick drum

there's only so much you can WRITE about music.

Plenty to check. First off read through the archive of Blackdown's Pitchfork colum:

http://www.blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/ - scroll to the bottom and see the links on the right-hand side.

There's interviews with El Sid from Hot Flush, Storming Productions , Boka, and plenty of artists on Kodama's web site Southern Steppa:

www.southernsteppa.com - click the Articles page.

There's a fascinating in-depth interview with J from Vex'd here:

http://grimemusic.com/content/view/22/34/

and another great interview with J again, this time with the Plastician, done while they were touring the US earlier this year:

http://www.dustedmagazine.com/features/397

Appleblim from Skull Disco does an interview with Paul Autonomic for his site www.riddim.ca here:

http://riddim.rhizomatic.org/index.php? ... ticleid=46

and a more recent interview with Paul from Hot Flush on the same site here:

http://riddim.rhizomatic.org/index.php? ... ticleid=33

Remember that some of the interviews are over a year old so may not represent the current state of play tho.

I know they're mostly interviews rather than articles specificall, but hope that helps. :)

Perhaps you could turn this into a point about how it has thrived on alternative media forms - ie just fans writing thier own blogs and reports.

the southern steppa site seems really good, articles involving other peple in the scene, even if they are a bit old. How come there are not any new interviews with these people though?

the blackdown site seems well written but all the dubstep articles on there are about kode 9 and dmz, not a bad thing but just a shame to keep it limited. i've found its the same with a lot of other dubstep bloggers, its like doing an article on reggae but only mentioning bob marley, which is a shame.

cheers for the info though guys, it will help a lot.

Interesting article inthis months atm magazine, charting the rise of dubstep. Im fed up of all the ignorant blanket statements on this forum, the music press is wank, if you take this drug you are a wasteman, piracy is the 8th deadly sin, etc, etc, childish arguements ad nauseum
Don't talk to me about soundsystems, I've been to Leeds...

The was written by a local sheffield jungle-and-now-dubstep DJ. Im seeing him spin tonight coincidentally.

i read the atm mag article, and i didn't think it was that good, it has not mentioned half the scene who from what i can see have played there part, it just seems like fringe journalism, not really digging deep.

if the main stream media are not going to support dubstep, then i would of thought at least the dubstep bloggers would.
