I think we are definitely fucked. Even if we (and possibly even the US - ha ha ha) were to learn the lesson that wealth creation through the production and distribution of consumer goods, and packed it all in we'd still be fucked. I say this because I beleive that the new boys in town (India and China) have still got a long way to go to learn this lesson, and we'll be fucked regardless of our actions.

Not to say that China and India shouldn't do what we have done and continue to do. They have just as much right to fuck the planet up as we did, but lessons learnt by a few, dare-I-say more advanced nations will not be learnt globally.

I was pointing out that your assumption that economic growth is the be-all and end-all is not sustainable and that something drastic needs to be done, which businesses will not do as it affects their margins, and governments will not do because they see growth as far more important than the planet. On a personal level, reduce the carbon footprint through less air travel, try and buy local produce, reduce the amount of unnecessary consumer shit and generally try and cause as little damage as possible.
