Slowed down drum n bass

Post by nicemarmot » Thu May 25, 2006 12:55 pm

If one more tnuc suggest to me that dubstep just sounds like dnb slowed down I'll fucking brain them.

Idiot - What you listening to at the moment?
Me - Dubstep - it fucking rules, you should try some
Wanker - Oh, that's just slow dnb isn't it
Me - Have you heard any? Skream? Mystikz? D1? Kode9? Burial? Loefah?
Fuckwit - Err, no
Me - why do you think it sounds like dnb then?
Shitforbrains - err, I just heard that it does
Me - Open your fucking ears. In fact, I'll do it for you *grabs baseball bat*

It does kinda sound like slowed down d&b. But the stuff from about ten years ago. Not all of it though. Calm down

Coming from a jungle background, im not so fussed when people liken it to dnb, even tho its obviously not. I guess people need to throw tags at it when they cant find a proper term for describing what they are hearing, maby its just to new for em.
What turned me off dnb was that it got too obsessed with speed, it all became about the drop rather than the progression of the tune.
What buzzes me about dubstep is that, at a slower tempo, you can pack so much more into a song. You get a real groove going, you build up tension and atmosphere, and you can reach sub bass lows that would just fuzz out if they were any faster.
Know what you mean tho, it pisses me off when people just disregard dubstep from what they have read or been told, rather than what they have heard. If one more cat tell me dubstep is just garage im gonna wing em (and no mr clark im not forgetting dubsteps obvious garage roots  ).

vexed is the word.

i was in bristol for a long weekend when the last subloaded was on and on the night we were meant to go my non-dubstep mate said "i dunno about going id rather go to Meat Katie with everyone else". gash.

None of my bristol mates will even LISTEN to any dubstep as they just say it is shit. Neither would they consider subloaded.

So i let them go and stayed home and smoked weed. No way in hell im listening to some boring ass MEat KAtie derivative breaks bollocks. Its agonisingly dull.
is it?

NO.

Are Meat katie anythng to do with Meat Beat Manifesto? I remember a sick track about never taking acid again a number of years ago....

I used to mix slowed down dnb with early plasticman/mark one stuff + a few other (garage/grime/dubstep) bits. Not everything worked but a lot was heavy!

Some stuff is like slow dnb - think of the breakstep gear. Please dont start arguing about the definitions too much though!!

imho too many peeps form opinions about music based on what they've heard other peeps say about it - or what they've read about it - or seen on fucking tv and tings. Just listen to the music. If your mates dont get it thats their problem - dont stress yourself.

Yeah but i don;t go to see a DJ cos i think they're "ok". I go to see them cos i think they're worth the effort of getting off the sofa. :D

I played my mate the Burial "album" mix by Kode 9 and the DMZ essential mix to try and convince him but no joy. He then played me some meat katie sets which i thought were total wank, like most prog breaks wibble. Just totally soul-less and uninspiring. :|
is it?

NO.

Absolute no link between Meat Beat and Meat Katie !!
Meat Beat aka Jack Dangers has been essential in the development of electronic music... Not Meat Katie imho ;p

I kinda think "who cares" if people think it's slowed down d&b. In fact I used to play slowed down d&b on the radio many moons ago anyway!

but seriously, there's enough people completely head over heels in love with dubstep for there to be decent nights, I don't think it'll appeal to everyone. Not until it's in the superclubs in a few years time and it's all washed out.

dammit, I *know* i'm the shizzle next to some fool that thinks d&b is slowed down drum and bass, so there's no need to get angry with the poor deluded fools.

ha ha
