Skeng (the bug) lyrics
I didn't say all that about this track in particular, I was responding to the comment about not understanding that someone would not play things out that contained bigoted lyrics.
With regard to Skeng however, he definitely say's Tec (as in tec 9) for your wife as far as I can tell. Anyway, it's a wicked track and very funny, as I'm sure it's supposed to be.

When my ex (Jamaican) went to uni, we went to go and have a look at the dance club to see if it was her cup of tea. There were like 6 really uber-gay guys enthusiastically dancing to the original version of 'log on'....possibly one of the most ironically hilarious things I have ever seen!!I think it's perfectly understandable that people would not wish to play out tunes that have bigoted content. I've got a copy of Log On (Horsepower remix) but I'm not going to play the 'Step on chi chi' mix out anywhere as it's quite probable that I'd a)give people the impression that I'm a homophobe and b)offend people. The distribution of bigotry is if not bigotry itself then exceedingly close to bigotry and by playing things out you are by definition distributing them.

given that a whole lot of similar/related music *is* really violent and homophobic, it's kinda hard to see how at least some people might not take it that way... I hadn't realised it was supposed to be a joke tbh. Not that I'd thought that hard about it.
(Personally I don't really have a problem with violence or whatever in songs, listen to plenty of stuff myself - just isn't the thing I wanna be doing when I'm DJ-ing sorta thing)
I heard that interview and i know the bug & flow done it for a joke but i do agree with this guys sentiments about violence in tunes in general, especially in grime - most young ppl i work with do copycat this style of lyrics and want to just rap about being the biggest badman on road, sad thing is that if you chat that then you feel have to live up to thatJoe C wrote:its a sick track and I still go nuts when it comes on
but I work with kids for a living who love these kinda lyrics, these kinda mcs are their dons, and it makes me fuckin sick when I see 15 year old good clever kids get on the mic with me on the buttons and them come out with copy cat lyrics.. because I see what happens when they have to live up to it and its not pretty.
there is a serious point though, although its really important to note musicians/artists need to say what they wanna say..
but still so many double standards in the scene about this.
I have been involved in this arguement before and it's quality to see many more people now expressing the ani-violence opinion. I said then that "anyone who has actually had any of this stuff happen to them would smash your record if you played it". The context of the tune is important. I don't think bug actually defended himself from an artistic standpoint cos he didn't enter into the arguement, to paraphrase he said either listen or don't but you can't censor it, and it shouldn't be taken seriously. He likened it to manga with extreme violence; it's a ropey analogy: manga has a plot, characters and often a reason behing the violence. This tune speaks to anyone with a chip on their shoulder: Iv'e cranked it when pissed off. The cliche is that it may affect impressionable people. But isnt there loads of crap, on TV, films, advertising etc that is just as affecting and influences behaviour? buying a fast car and driving like a george clooney (looney) is more destructive. Anyone who wants to play at being anything in these lyrics will encounter a world of pain, hatred, paranoia, misery and self obsession to the point of alienation. If you want lyrics with a message, opt for manuva. Skeng is a quality tune, thats all it is.
good job on the transcripts, much appreciated
Flowdan is in Roll Deep, and they chat bare lyrics like these but I never heard them say they were joking before, so this is just a one off then?

I like violence in music. At its best it channels destructive violence into something clever, funny, eye-opening and constructive... I like Death Metal, I like The Who, I like Ice Cube... all with violent lyrics. I don't like bigotry, but that's another matter.
