Or just serve with flash and cover 98% of the population or continue using real player and serve only 52%!BlizzardMusic wrote:True true. But can the flash player give you a pause option and an oppurtunity to skip to the place you want to hear or does it just skip in 5 and 15 minutes like Real Player?Ashley wrote:Or just serve with flash and cover 98% of the population or continue using real player and serve only 52%!BlizzardMusic wrote:True true. Depends on the setup. My guess is that it will be streaming so technically you cannot skip ahead as you are listening to it as it happens (bit like rinse etc). Pausing it, hm, not sure, I dont think it will save the music being played until you unpause. Probably will either find the stream and latch onto it again or just fuck up.BlizzardMusic wrote:But can the flash player give you a pause option and an oppurtunity to skip to the place you want to hear or does it just skip in 5 and 15 minutes like Real Player?Ashley wrote:Or just serve with flash and cover 98% of the population or continue using real player and serve only 52%!BlizzardMusic wrote:True true. No chance you'll find me using RP, but I can stream the show fine with this
I listen to it every now and again, but the quality is the main downer to me. Loading times aren't that bad. A skip backwards button would be pretty cool, for the rewinds!

The BBC Real Player decision for Radio playbacks has always puzzled me. If the BBC has the raw technology and resources to power things like IPlayer and the BBC Redux system, why did they choose one of the worst mainstream products for it Radio Playback system? And at such a low encoding? THANK THE LORD ALMIGHTY people recorded the actual broadcast of the Dubstep Warz show, it would have been criminal to archive such a landmark show in (*spits*) real audio.
Surely the appropriate licensing and system costs to get a good quality flash based player or, god forbid, a download service for the major radio channels, is not that exorbitant? I mean there are countless privately run net radios as well as archive services run out of people's spare time and money.

I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

Can't use Flash on Uni PCs.
Just have an option for download. And don't make people sign up either. A simple counter will tell how many times it been downloaded.
If u still can't download in 08 then you need to re-evaluate your life.

the real player on the beeb website crashes my browser every single time I try to use it. I suspect it means I should update my realplayer but I don't want to let it onto my computer.
I'm fairly certain I saw someone at work listening to "I'm sorry I haven't a clue" from radio 4 via the IPlayer.
I would bet the majority of the net radios run out of people's pockets though don't pay, even though they should, the MCPS/PRS (or whatever the one is) fees that the BBC do.

Another thing worth mentioning is that sometimes I don't want to have to sit at my computer to listen to the show. I like being able to download the show and listen to it when I want, where I want. I understand some of the problems with this comes down to copywrite issues etc so not sure how much can be done with giving access to downloadable shows. Also The sound quality of RP is a major issue. It just sounds bad.

Re: BBC Real Player - please discuss..
well to be honest its the sound quality that puts me offmary anne hobbs wrote:hello
i know many of you are having serious problems with the BBC Real Player.. on the Radio1 website..
it's of paramount importance to me to keep the Listen Again hits up on the BBC site to demonstrate that the scene i'm supporting is vibrant...
but i get the sense that more and more of you are being driven straight to other sites that host digital downloads of the show..
can you give me some constructive feedback here about the Real Player that i can pass to the BBC management?
get angry and frustrated if you want to, but keep it articulate so i can pass it on..
the new version of the Real Player crashes on me repeatedly, and i will often have to abandon my attempts to listen to my own show and others... so i feel the same frustration... trust me..
it's time to try to get something done about it..
your help is very much appreciated...
much love
m/a.. x
and the fact i can listen on the bus which is when im most bored & in need of some new music being presented by yourself
i dont see why you cant just offer a download from the site for a week at a choice of bitrate..cant the bbc afford this?
i currently get it from corenews as they get there first
id also like a version where you say fuck, tnuc & butthole a few times as i hate how clean & sanitised the non swearing thing makes it:D

Listening to the show directly in Realplayer helps:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/shows/rp ... /hobbs.rpm
I find sometimes the stream gets mangled completely or falls silent, really annoying.

the tendency to use realplayer on the beeb site , is across the board, a disaster for me....
be it newsnight review or kermode´s film reviews, its all realplayer and;
on windows its full of spyware, slow, crashes , wont load properly etc etc , ie it is a shambles of a program
on my mac it refuses to run properly at all , and frankly given the amount of extra rubbish real products always covertly install , i´m not going to screw up an extremely expensive laptop for one horrendous appliaction....
they should have quicktime for mac users and windows media player for windows, simple as bloody pie!!!!!!!
downloads would be great, but i assume would take up more bandwidth, especially in the case of video streams (eg newsnight)?¿ in anycase the first port of call should be to get rid of realmedia products full stop , then make sure everything can run on both mac and windows fine.
please harrass the suits , this has been so frustrating for me , as i´m never in when alot of the archived beeb stuff is on and the radio shows broadcast in appaling sound quality.....
