Not interested in flame wars over sub genres, am interested in personal histories. The more the merrier cos it builds up a bigger better overview of how things fit into the lattice.

That's why breakstep never caught on, caused profuse batty crease sweatage to occur, resulting in piles. Obvious when you think about it.

Some interesting definitions of what breakstep is in this thread.

Definitely is not 'slowed down drum and bass'.

Definitely is Zinc, Darqwan, Oris Jay, Search and Destroy, Chase and Status.

There is a fine line between some of the breakbeat of the era we're talking about and breakstep but as a general rule it is a discernable movement.
SOON COME:

Wascal sux.

Feelin' DLX and Fragile too.

I'll have something in the next couple days that yinz might like.

It's all dubstep to me but I have been in the achey breaky mood lately. (I'm a rapper and don't know it)
I think I forgot the :6:

Wascal is a badman, if you didn't know that already.

Shonx got some real nice stuff too. Don't know if his name came up or not.

Here is that thing I was working on. http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=580200#580200

I do agree with this. Most of what we are talking about here is just dubstep... with breakbeats IMO.

with really advanced breakbeats, if you get what i mean. consider the rhythms s&d, toasty, dubchild, et. al. are using vs standard amen breaks. and once those rhythms are going the overall feel changes, even if the vibe is same as dubstep.

Well maybe that should have been indicated in the thread title to avoid having to read 50% of the posts that are about what Breakstep is or isn't.

Heh, full of good ideas you are. Thread should have been called "The mighty mighty rolling dubstep with breakbeats thread that is sometimes called breakstep yet no one really seems to agree on what it is but sort of agree on what it isn't" you reckon ?

I'm kinda leaning towards 'bumcrackstep' as a name now 8)

and don't forget horsepower!

fairplay - at the time it was all "garage" and a bit later "dubstep" but it's not unusual at all for labels to get coined later for clarification (and as new proponents of the sound move forward). for example rockabilly was never called that when the sound first appeared.

Breakstep came before dubstep but it was kind of so niche it never got mainstream attention so the name never caught on.
