hi fi problems with subs

Just got a minotaur from BK - got it running thru my shitty old amp which has a sub out - sounds sick - but no phono...

so

my main amp has no sub out so ive got find and use some fuckin next Neutrik speakon High Level -> yellow , , red , black speaker cable?? I cant even find one on ebay or google - only place seems to be free with the expensive subs... can anyone offer any advice??

Not completely sure what your trying to do, but the sub looks like it has a low pass filter built in, so you should be able to split your signal (from mixer etc.) into two wires (per channel of course), send one as usual to your main amp (for tops) and then just buy one speakon connector (ebay or a pro audio webshop) and screw in the wires, and plug this into sub.

Probably easiest to make your own wires up for this. Bear in mind there are two types of speakon connector: two pole and four pole. Four pole connectors work in two pole sockets though.

basically for ages my setup has been laptop-tapco 6 mixer->marantz amp-> speakers

the two ways suggested by BK to get the sub going are;

plug dedicated sub outs into the woofers sub ins [rca] - this is the low level input

and/or

wire three of one's speaker cables into the neutrik and plug that into the high level input

problem is i don't have a sub out or a neutrik thingy and im not entirely sure how i'd do it - does it merely group the three cables together ?? a jpg of exactly what i need is here

when you say split the signal from mixer i assume thats from rcas? it doesnt have a sub out though....

Right, got you now.

For the speakon connection you wire yellow and red to your positive left & right speaker outs on amp (that will be the two red posts) and the black one to either of the negative (black) terminals. Found that from here
Should be simple but googling for cables comes up with nothing, might have to try ringing through the dealers on that site although they'le probably try and sell you something for 100 quid.

Its a simple cable to make up if you can find out which cables go to which terminal on the speakon (1+,1-,2+,2-). Maybe ask BK. Then buy a Neutrik 4 pole speakon and 3-way cable (even mains cable will do fine, I get crisp Dubstep putting a Kw through fairly thick mains cable). Also no soldering required for speakon connectors.

Alternatively, get an rca splitter cable, such as this, split your signal out of the mixer before it goes into your amp, put one fork into amp for tops as usual and get an rca extension cable for the other fork and plug that into the sub. Mixer outputs should be the right level to go straight into the rca ins on the sub, (you can always test this by plugging straight into it now from the mixer and see how it sounds, obviously you'l only have bass). You dont need a dedicated "sub out" as the sub (from what I can see in the photo) has a sweepable low pass filter to cut off the high frequencies, again test this before buying any more cables.

Just thought, the speakon is probably wired the obvious way, connect the two positive (red and yellow) two the two positive terminals (1+,2+). It doesnt matter which one goes to which as they should get mono'd inside (but keep them separate) and the negative (black) wire to the negative terminals, don't know which one (1- or 2-) but test it or maybe a bit in both if your cable's thick enough.

Only bad thing is that if this is wrong its now wired into your other speakers and amp and might short the amps output , so best check with BK.
