You've hit the nail on the head really - why would anyone listen to a low audio-quality player that you have to install a very poor piece of software for, that can only skip forward 5 or 15 minutes, can't rewind, crashes all the time and is only there for a week when you can get a perfect quality rip in minutes, usually no longer than a few hours after the show is broadcast and that you can keep? As someone I know on another forum mentioned, offer an inferior product and people will go elsewhere.
The only reason you'd want to is for the obvious reason you mention of giving you hits on your show to show its popularity. It's very unfortunate that this is the way that the popularity of shows is decided though, your show gets 100s of downloads elsewhere that never get recorded. You know a system is messed up when you yourself have to encourage people to click on the listen again feature, even if they're not going to even listen to it that way, just to prove that people like your show.
Cheers,
irv

Maybe speak with the popular hosting sites (ie barefiles and getdarker) and look at the stats of downloaded past shows?? Even with those two alone there has got to be a solid amount of numbers there...
We have got into the routine of putting as many mah's shows up and then switching them over to her user account so she can monitor the stats.
I have pm'ed her (a while ago) a username and password to log in but she might have deleted it without thinking.
Also, we provide a "listen feature" using a flash player and she gets to see the listen hits too.
Im sure if she approached us and asked for more tailored statistics we would be happy to oblige.

It's really fucking with me today. Keeps crashing and telling me i have network problems. Not usually that bad. It is a shit player though, should be able to stream the content through VLC imo.

people..
i had a very positive reaction from the head of interactive and the higher management at Radio1 who read all your comments, frustrations and suggestions about solutions with great interest...
they will have a major announcement for us all at the end of the month as regards resolving problems with the way the programmes are delivered on-line..
your voices have been so valuable, thank you very much for helping me out here.. i really appreciate it..
with love and maximum respect

The radio 1 flash widget should look like Sub FM's flash player. Just a button that you press. Simple yet effective.

If you like jungle / drum and bass you'll like the above!

Yo, British taxpayers, the Beeb is technically yours.
You don't like Real Player (and I don't either), use these responses as a citizens petition and put some heat on the suits to find an alternative.
"But it's not that simple..." Yeah, well its your tax money funding their salaries. Make them earn it for once.
Failing that, call for a radio strike. Yes, I said it -- a radio strike for a better player widget. Beats getting ripped off and being frustrated.

get angry and frustrated if you want to, but keep it articulate so i can pass it on..
Get it working on Macs - at the moment I have to listen to your wonderful show during free periods in my school library. I feel this may be having a detrimental effect on my education!
