[CHI] APR 4 : BASSGOESBOOM w/ CASPA & SUPERISK
Tip of the Week
BassGoesBoom: Caspa
Noah Levine
Just shy of its first anniversary, dubstep monthly BassGoesBoom continues to gain steam by bringing the genre’s top players to its energized parties. This month Caspa makes his Chicago debut at the night, and as the creator of several dancefloor anthems and co-author of a recent FabricLive mix, the Londonite who took his stage name from a character in Larry Clark’s "Kids" is one of dubstep’s most in-demand artists. Recently named to the URB Next 100 alongside his Fabric mix partner Rusko, Caspa’s rousing mix of reactive breaks, snapping rubber-band basslines and classic dub touches is earning praise from both in and outside the dubstep scene. His massive tracks "Rubber Chicken" and "Big Headed Slags" are magnets for the rewind, and he keeps busy running a trio of dubstep labels and releasing new music on others as well. His career’s been exploding in the last few years, and it’s all come very quickly for Caspa. Music wasn’t always his focus and certainly not his first love, but when repeated shoulder dislocations ended his promising hoops career, he traded in his sneakers for a computer and Fruity Loops software. The first track he got onto the radio was snatched up for release, and ever since he’s been very busy finding new ways to shake a room. On this night Caspa will have some help putting the Lava sound system through its paces. Hench Crew member and Dubstep.FM host Superisk will be making the trip across the pond from his Bristol home, and BGB co-creator Timid is set to flood the room with bass as well. The night also marks a transition for BGB, as it will be the first event since promoter DJ Four/4 moved to Philadelphia. An early champion of the dubstep sound in this city, Four/4 played a big part in helping the music’s molasses beats find a home in Chicago.
Caspa joins Superisk, Timid and the Entro MC at Lava, 1270 North Milwaukee, (773)342-5282, on April 3, 9pm-2am. $10 (2008-04-01)

Yo Tim, this is Todd's boy Brendon. Just wanted to say thanks to you, everyone at Lava and all the UK guys for the past couple month's worth of parties, they have been off the proverbial chain. First Hatcha and Benga, then Plastician, now Caspa.. too much fun. Each month the attendance seems to have grown by leaps and bounds; I've witnessed the progression from just a normal friday night moderately attended bar crowd to a sweaty sardine-packed palpable whompfest full of rowdy animals ready to murk somebody.
Caspa was bomb. He played all the songs I wanted to hear and, as much as I love bumping it on my decent home theater system, I find myself rediscovering my love for dubstep in a club setting. There's really nothing like it, there were times friday night when the air was so thick with bass that I felt like I was swimming from one end of the room to the other, traversing the deep end of which each time I passed in front of the speakers. I was the sweaty kid in the yellow shirt, sorry if I bumped into you or got too rowdy. What can I say, I comes from the jungle.
Anyway, just wanted to come on here and thank everybody that makes these shows possible. Any idea who's on board for the next one? Also just wanted to mention that if you guys need any help promoting, don't hesitate to get in touch with me through email or myspace. I already preach the dubstep gosphel pretty hard, I wouldn't mind spreading the word with some fliers/posters/etc.
Also, any idea if Caspa's set was taped, or is he the type of guy that doesn't allow taping/spreading of his life sets? If not, I would love to get my hands on that and would be able to spread it through my blog, a bunch of bittorrent sites, themixingbowl.org, etc.
Big ups, respekt, just thanks
