Any recommendations about who to use or who to avoid? I'm building a lo-fi site...

I can recommend Dreamhost.

I signed up last year when they were doing a ridiculously cheap offer but even now it's back to normal rates (around $10 a month, I think?) it's still really good value.

Very reliable, you get loads of space and bandwidth... full PHP 5.1 and MySQL etc.

I can recommend AJ-Group in Europe. I have a couple of site there. Cheap, fast, good services.
