Tuning drums

I've seen people chat about tuning drum sounds to get them in key - in particular the kick drum in relation to the sub.

How necessary is it and how do you go about it? By ear?

all done by ear.

The reason to do it is so that things don't stick out and to give "oomph" when the kick hits.

I tune all my drums - kick, high hats, snares, whatever - so that they sit properly in the mix tone wise. Offkey is good, but only to a certain amount!

yeah man best off to do it by ear.

you can also use wavelab to tell you what note a sample is.
or you can use spectral analysis.
cos some people take a while to train there ears, i did.

if you happen to have a shitty cheap guitar tuner lying about can always use that hah

u know what sounds sick though if you get a kick and sub perfectly in tune then just detune one of the two by a cent or three... proper filth

but

if yr happy with your tune no need to do things just because other people are!

Its a funny one. I dont notice it in my beats when I have it wrong... but I do hear it other peoples beats when they get it right.

Like in Goat Stare, that knock knock drum that comes in. Fits in the track perfectly...

Surely if you sample your drums from records they are gonna be in a their own tune and shifting them up and down is only going to change them in relation to that tune, if ya get me?
