Usually the appeal of ds for me is hindered by predictability and enhanced by danceability but then you get the rare pieces that transcend their own limitations so that I wonder: how was this envisioned?, let alone made. Like leaps in evolution due to spontaneous mutation, they synthesise what has come before, previously disparate emnations cohere and, for five minutes, there is no dichotomy.
That do?

That do?

Fair enough. But where the hell did that come from?!?!SD5 wrote:Usually the appeal of ds for me is hindered by predictability and enhanced by danceability but then you get the rare pieces that transcend their own limitations so that I wonder: how was this envisioned?, let alone made. "Are you trying to tell me the cable company are sending me lizards?"
Mea culpa, I was indeed, quite lamely, trying to show how cool I am (was). I was also in a way saying that it was not worth it to answer the question, but then why not save the bytes? So, mea culpa again.Mr. Lizard wrote:What a shit statement.Blip wrote:Easy: clownstep and intelligent.
Why has no one answered the question? and just used it as an excuse to show how cool they are?
i think the question has been a bit misinterpreted, im not trying to split dubstep up i was jus wondering what tunes bridge the light/dark gap

STOP SPLITTING THE SCENE. MONEY DOESNT NEED TO EXIST ANYMORE LOL
I dont think Stenchman was talking about splitting the scene as such...
just that some tunes clearly have a dark vibe...some tunes clearly have a light vibe, and i think he was wondering what tunes you would say fall into that magical ethreal 'in-between' territory.
I listen to alot of music, and would definately agree with the 'good/shit theory' and enjoy the variety of influences you can hear in Dubstep. Inspite of this, I reckon its unrealistic to expect people not to catagorise certain sounds into sub-genres... like it or not, its a natural evolution with any music.

Don't know why people are so fixated on this, to be honest. I know it was shit when drum and bass turned into 748 niche subgenres each with about five records in it and nobody would admit to liking more than about two of them, but I think dubstep's maybe going too far the other way.Fixation wrote:dj phonetic wrote:Dont split it, please
I keep coming across people who say they don't like dubstep because they don't like stuff they've heard from (for instance) Rusko and Caspa (or inferior Rusko and Caspa wannabes) and then get really surprised when you play them Peverelist or Pangea or Mala or whatever. Which is shit because although I quite like Rusko and Caspa, their stuff isn't to a lot of people's tastes and loads of people not giving Peverelist a listen because they don't like Cockney Thug is fucking shit from everyone's point of view. Ironically, because noone ever talks about subgenres its actually hard for a lot of people who don't know the scene to get the idea that not all dubstep sounds the same...
well to answer the StenchBot's _ACTUAL_ question:
I'd say, for me, tracks like:
Tes La Rok - Reggae on NOPPA
and
Jazzsteppa (pretty much any track)
and
Natural Marcus - Talks Of The Prejudiced (Clouds version)
and so on
sort of have BOTH dark and light elements.
They have the happy, reggae-y or jazz-y parts then go BOOM into squonking dark bassline evil for a while
But unlike the evil from start to finish tracks (eg anything on Suicide Dubs) they then go back again to lighter sounds
and then EVIL again!
It's great - love these tracks for this. Although it does make them hard to stick in one category or the other.
Perhaps they are in both. Which means you have to either buy two copies or cut them in half....
And just by the by if dubstep were to be split, it would have to be along the Ham and non-Ham lines....
