all music/art can be imbued with meaning/purpose. when that purpose is bad, the art could be argued to be fundamentally bad.
Even if it has a sick beat and catchy lyrics? I think it's possible to like something aesthetically without agreeing with it's message or meaning.

but can you really avoid its intent/influence? even if you're aware of it?

like lets talk about last fm. i've been pretty anti-last fm since the get go. i don't like putting spyware on my computer.
then at sxsw last fm gives me a big page of stickers with genre names on them, and we stick them all over ourselves. my crotch said HARD ROCK. or something like that. my ass said SINGER SONGWRITER. i was joking about how now we're all going to go home and sign up for last fm.
i really did not intend on signing up for last fm.

but then last week i fucking signed up for last fm. now i check it like 20 times a day. i scrobble every thing. come check out my awesome music taste http://www.last.fm/user/chrisparson/ :D

you can see this girl has FUNK on her sunglasses

Sure you can avoid it's influence. At least I can. I have free will and power over my thoughts and behavior and I can choose to reject ideas that I don't agree with. Art/music can at times serves the purpose of communicating ideas that would otherwise remain hidden and taboo in our culture/religio/poltical systems. Art and music are not necessarily a call to action.

As far as last fm goes.... You can turn it off anytime you like.

so you don't like anything that on another level you see as being quite bad

its not because its pop music...i feel the same way about happy hardcore

i love timbalands production

its usually the other way around and most people are only comfortable liking pop songs...i guess some people are understandably guilty of wishing to distance themselves from that way of thinking so they do the reverse.
i just like having a variety of stuff to listen to is all
if you like something can it really be bad? i also like some happy hardcore - i don't think it's the most intelligent credible music in the world. but i certainly don't have that criteria set up to decide whether or not i like something.

if i like something i don't think it's bad. you can bring in other things like it being cheesy, base, dumb or whatever, but if i like it i think it's good.

liking someone's production but not liking the vocal is a different issue i reckon.

you can perhaps think something lacks the values of something else but to what extent is this judgment your own and to what extent are you being influenced by other factors?
fair enough...i just think of stuff with kitsch value or whatever as being bad in the sense it didn't achieve its intended goal if that makes any sense....like top gun....i enjoy watching it but not for the reasons you were supposed to enjoy it from the makers points of view..its the same with Happy hardcore..bonkers 1 is ridiculous....but i think what i like about it isnt what was intended.....with someone like shitmat i think its funny as well but its LESS funny to me because he wanted it to be funny in that way

with timbaland i suppose its different though..same for ayo technology...i do respect the production hugely but its more the image they want to project that i suppose keeps me from fully embracing its identity

thats as honest as i can be

I used to listen to a lot of pop music and like a bunch of it. I don't know what it is. I guess cuz I'm over 30 but I get a rash when I listen to modern pop music. Once in a while I am forced to listen and I will dig a tune. The last thing was that Sean Kingston tune, Beautiful Girls. Before that it was Gnarls Barkley. I love old rock n roll and rnb, it's nice to here those influences in modern stuff. I have seen the hate threads on a bunch of my favorite websites, I guess I'm not supposed to like thtat stuff. I don't want to but I do.

Plus I was jammin out to some really boring ring tone jump up dnb business. I guess after listening Skull Step for an hour that shit starts to sound ok.

But the beauty of art is that it has many different interpretations to many different people, the idea that the interpretation of the art should be shaped by the artists intention is illogical

(Image)

not only because it assumes the artist's intention but also because it negates the way in which each person can experience different emotions from another in response to art.

yeah fair enough..i mean that in a sense is why i like the tunes at all...but i still think somebody thats intended what they've actually achieved (fair play i don't KNOW what they intended but ive got a good idea it wasn't what i like about it) should get more respect than someone thats made something hilarious...like speak the hungarian rapper for example!..but i still often get more enjoyment from the latter!

haha safe for reminding me of that.

Yeah I see what you mean about 'respect', still don't think that's a reason to feel like you should or shouldn't like something. My train's run out of steam now.
